We will begin by recounting our visit to Skipton Castle to complete our previous learning. Then we will be reading a story called Dear Greenpeace, to help us write our own letters to real people. We want to raise the important issue of caring for our planet and the world’s oceans. We will be writing instructions too linked to our gardening in Science. In hand with all this, we will continue learning SPaG elements linked to our texts.

Children will continue learning key word spellings, common exception words and will continue to learn to apply phase 5 graphemes in their writing.

Handwriting sessions continue to support the children reach the end of year objectives and more of us are learning to join.

We will be doing our SATs this half term which will include: two reading tests, a spelling test and a SPaG test.

SCIENCE

Growing Plants

In this unit children will explore how seeds and bulbs grow into mature plants. They will investigate what plants need to grow and will find out and describe how plants need water, light and a suitable temperature to grow and stay healthy. Children will discover where seeds come from by investigating fruits and seeds in their local environment. They will carefully observe and sort seeds and will also recognise how some plants are able to grow from bulbs. They will plant a variety of seeds, describing how they grow. Children will have the opportunity to plant seeds and to observe growth.

Working Scientifically, children will observe seeds and plants using simple equipment. They will ask simple questions about what plants need to grow and they will perform simple tests recognising that their questions can be answered in different ways. They will observe and measure the growth of the plants over time.

This unit builds on the work children have completed in Year 1 Plants.

We will be producing a sculpture out of plastic for our school garden.
