Welcome to Year 1 Summer term.

What a busy term we have in store this term, it will be out of this world…

The creative curriculum topic for this term is Mega Structures we focus on the International Space Station, Satellites and Rockets all linked to the topic of Space.

The children will be learning about the Space programme using a time line. They will be learning about the first British Astronaut to go into Space, Tim Peake.

On 15 December 2015, Major Tim Peake embarked on the Principia mission to the International Space Station, where he spent six months orbiting Earth. Thanks to extraordinary leaps in communication technology, we watched as he broadcast live experiments, walked in space and even ran the London Marathon.

The class homework is all about the Space topic to develop the children’s creative ideas through art, DT, poetry and designing creative pieces of work.

This term we started the Space topic with a bang. The children loved the clips and were inspired to asked lots of questions about the events we staged for the children. Click on the links below.


English – The children will be reading and writing stories linked to Space: Q Pootle 5, Aliens love Underpants and Beegu and many more Space stories.

This week the children are reading the story ‘Alien’s love Underpants,’ and they will be rewriting the story and designing their own ‘underpants’ using adjectives in their writing.

The children will be reading and writing nonfiction text about Space. They will be writing instructions on how to make a rocket and other space inventions.

Find 1 more, 1 less, 10 more, 10 less than any 2-digit number; explore patterns on the 100-square; understand place value in 2-digit numbers and identify 10s and 1s
Use number facts to add and subtract 1-digit numbers to/from 2-digit numbers; add pairs of 1-digit numbers with totals above 10; sort out additions into those you ʻjust knowʼ and those you need to work out
Add three small numbers, spotting pairs to 10 and doubles; add and subtract 10 to and from 2-digit numbers

Compare weights and capacities using direct comparison; measure weight and capacity using uniform non-standard units; complete tables and block graphs, recording results and information; make and use a measuring vessel for capacity

Find half of all numbers to 10 and then to 20; identify even numbers and begin to learn halves; recognise halves and quarters of shapes and begin to know 2/2=1, 4/4=1 and 2/4=1/2; recognise, name and know value of coins 1p–£2 and £5 and £10 notes; solve repeated addition problems using coins; make equivalent amounts using coins

Science – Identifying Materials.

In this unit children will have identified and named common types of materials including wood, metal, plastic, rubber, fur, towelling, nylon, wool, sponge, cotton wool, paper, card, brick, ceramics, rock and some liquids and powdered solids. They will have labelled, collected and grouped together objects made from the same material. They will state that different objects can be manufactured from the same materials. They will say why some materials are unsuitable for some objects.

Working scientifically, children will have tested the properties of different liquids. They will have investigated which materials are good to wrap and protect a hollow chocolate object being sent through the post.


The children follow the Charanga music program with Mr. Derbyshire each week.


Our learning this term will be asking the question ‘’what makes some places sacred’’

ICT- The children are learning about Algorithms to use in every day events.

P.E – This term the children will be participating in Games (outdoors –weather permitting)

Please ensure your child has a pair of black pumps or trainers in School every week.

It is important that children have a P.E. kit in School every day.

Please remember your child’s book bag and reading book each day. P.E. days are Monday and Thursday. Homework is given out on Friday and need to be returned no later than Wednesday. Please remember to practise the year 1 key words as the children need to be able to read and spell the words.
