At Corrie we value the arts and democracy as drivers for our music curriculum. Through a high quality music curriculum children engage in creativity and are inspired to develop a love for music and performing arts. Children have the opportunity to develop their talents as musicians through a rich programme of study. Children develop self confidence to perform at all levels and to many audiences. At Corrie, children have the opportunity to take part in a series of events throughout the year including shows that deliver song, dance and instrumental pieces. We support the teaching of the music curriculum by enhancing it with a wide variety of extra curricular activities. Within their music lessons, children are taught to read and compose music, listen and appraise, create and explore with music and sing and perform. As we value democracy at Corrie, children are given opportunities to work together to compose pieces of music to showcase to others. They are given the chance to critically evaluate each others’ performances and give advice on how to improve in a safe and respectful environment.
Aims
The national curriculum for music aims to ensure that all pupils:
- Perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians.
- Learn to sing and to use their voices, to create and compose music on their own and with others, have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, use technology appropriately and have the opportunity to progress to the next level of musical excellence.
- Understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated, including through the inter-related dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notation.
