Welcome to Year 2!

Welcome to Year 2!

The team in Year 2 are really looking forward to working hard this half term in the run up to the October Half Term!

Have a look through below to find out a little about what we will be exploring this half term.

We will be starting the half term off by following the journey of young Rosie Revere who dreams of becoming a great engineer. Where some people see rubbish, Rosie Revere sees inspiration. Alone is her room at night, shy Rosie constructs great inventions from odds and ends. Rosie’s gizmos would astound – if she ever let anyone see them. Afraid of failure, she hides them away under her bed. Until a fateful visit from her great-great aunt Rose, who shows her that a first flop isn’t something to fear – it’s something to celebrate! We will be walking in Rosie’s footsteps by planning and constructing our very own Gizmo’s. We will be writing instructions for building or using them, adverts to advertise them and much more. We will also be taking inspiration from Andrea Beaty the magnificent author to innovate our own narratives.

This year we will be working hard to improve our spelling and will be a huge focus within our morning work and woven within many other curriculum areas. As the Year 2 team, we strongly recommend that children practice the many common exception words and spelling rules for Years 1 and 2. If spelling is an particular area that your child wants to improve, please use the word lists and suggested spelling games below.

This half term we will be sharpening our fluency skills and covering the following:

  • Place Value in numbers between 0-100, for example, comparing and ordering numbers
  • Addition and Subtraction facts, including number bonds to 10 in simple and harder calcualtions
  • Identifying and classifying 2D shapes

We will also be kick starting our journey with Times Table Rockstars to strengthen our times table knowledge. Therefore, please make the most of your child’s Times Table Rockstars account to develop their knowledge of the times tables and see their rock status grow!

The children also have accounts for Active Learn where they can revise and apply their knowledge through tasks that cover the entire Year 2 curriculum. All activities can be accessed when using a laptop or desktop. However, some are limited when using a tablet or an iPad.

Similarly, the children also have access to espresso which can be used in a similar way to Active Learn but they are able to explore interactive resources covering the entire Year 2 curriculum as oppose to just Maths.

Uses of Materials is our first topic we will be exploring in Science. Through this top children will name, identify and hunt for everyday materials including wood, metal, plastic, glass, rubber, brick, rock, paper, fabric and card. They will list properties of different materials such as hardness, strength, flexibility and shininess. They will learn that the properties of materials are important to the object they are made from. They will identify suitable and unsuitable materials for different objects and will be able to explain why.

Working Scientifically, children will classify materials sorting them into groups in a variety of ways. They will use reference materials to find out some fascinating facts about a type of material. They will compare the strength of different types of paper predicting which will rip when pulled by their hands. They will learn what absorbency means and explore the absorbency of different types of materials. They will examine different ways to record results and select an appropriate way to record the results of an investigation about waterproof materials. They will apply the findings from these investigations to design a product.

We will be exploring our local area in our first topic, “Our Town, Our Denton!”.

Please see the curriculum page to find out more.

Religious Educations

“Who is a Muslim and what do they believe?”

This is the question we will be focusing on this half term. We will be discovering and discussing why religions, such as Christianity and Islam, have different beliefs. In particular, the significant figures we worship and the lessons they teach.

This half term we will begin our project ‘Vehicles’. In this project, children will be researching, designing and building their own vehicles. Children will produce their own advert to advertise their vehicle using Stop Animate, Do Ink Green Screen and iMovie.

Dance is our focus this half term, within this topic we will be exploring the different types of movement to represent different living things and animated everyday items.

Please make sure that your child’s P.E. Kit consists of a pair of black pumps, plain black shorts or plain black jogging bottoms and a plain white t-shirt or one with the school logo. We suggest that your child brings their P.E. Kit into school when we begin the term and only take it home at the end of the term so that it can be washed and refreshed ready for the next half term. That way your child will always have their kit in school and they are prepared for every lesson.

Our theme for this half term is ‘Being me in my World’, where we will discuss what’s good about ourselves and explore what we want to achieve to continue growing and excelling with our unique talents.

In Year 2 homework is given out each Friday and is to be returned every Wednesday. The children can choose from the Our Town, Our Denton Take Away Homework Sheet. Homework can be presented in any way the children wish, so if they have published something using an iPad, tablet or computer please email it to us!

The children are also asked to read at least twice a week to someone at home. We ask the children to record this in their Reading Log. Reading books are changed daily – whenever your child is ready for a new book. Therefore, remind your child to hand it in so that it can be organised for them.

Please take a look at our Year 2 Reading Log Comment Top Tips, your comments can really help us and your child improve in reading.

Don’t forget that your homework and reading are monitored as part of your Assertive Mentoring profile
