Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!

The team in Year 2 are really looking forward to working hard this half term in the run up to the February Half Term!

Have a look through below to find out a little about what we will be exploring this half term.

We will be starting the half term off by exploring some strange new inhabitants of our playground. They have long scaly tails and sharp golden claws. I wonder who they are? Where have they come from and why are they here?

Over this half term we will be learning how to;

  • Use the prefix un-
  • Recognise and use different types of words such as verbs, nouns, adverbs, adjectives, prepositions and conjunctions in our sentences.
  • Write and punctuate different types of sentences such as statements, questions, commands and exclamations.
  • Write noun and expanded noun phrases.
  • Proofread and edit our writing effectively.
  • Correctly spell words that use the suffixes -ed, -ing, -ly, -ment, -ful and -ness.

This year we will be working hard to improve our spelling and will be a huge focus within our morning work and woven within many other curriculum areas. As the Year 2 team, we strongly recommend that children practice the many common exception words and spelling rules for Years 1 and 2. If spelling is an particular area that your child wants to improve, please use the word lists and suggested spelling games below.

This half term we will be sharpening our fluency skills and covering the following:

  • Mental multiplication and sequences in 2s, 3s, 5s and 10s
  • Place value
  • Mental addition and subtraction
  • Money – Calculating totals and change
  • Recognsing the properties of 3D shapes
  • Telling the time to the nearest 5 minutes

We will also be kick starting our journey with Times Table Rockstars to strengthen our times table knowledge. Therefore, please make the most of your child’s Times Table Rockstars account to develop their knowledge of the times tables and see their rock status grow!

The children also have accounts for Active Learn where they can revise and apply their knowledge through tasks that cover the entire Year 2 curriculum. All activities can be accessed when using a laptop or desktop. However, some are limited when using a tablet or an iPad.

Similarly, the children also have access to espresso which can be used in a similar way to Active Learn but they are able to explore interactive resources covering the entire Year 2 curriculum as oppose to just Maths.

Our next unit will be ‘Changing Shape’. In this unit children will work towards answering the Quest question ‘How can we make art from changing the shape of materials?’. They will create a piece of artwork that applies the skills and knowledge developed in the unit. Children will learn that the shape of materials can be changed by squashing, bending, twisting and stretching. They will also explore how twisting can be used to make threads stronger and identify which materials bend or squash most easily.

Working Scientifically, children will investigate how materials can be grouped according to their properties. They will have the opportunity to perform simple tests to find the stretchiest material and observe how silly putty changes over time.

We will be exploring our monarchy and castles throughout Britain in our topic, “Dungeons and Dragons”.

Please see the curriculum page to find out more.

Religious Educations

“What can we learn from sacred books?”

This is the question we will be focusing on this half term. We will be discovering and discussing what religions, such as Christianity and Islam, learn from the sacred books of their religion.

This half term we will begin our project ‘Mythical Creatures’. In this project, children will be exploring how animations are created and they will begin develop the skills involved for themselves to make their stop animation.

Gymnastics is our focus this half term, within this topic we will be exploring the different types of movement including, pace and height using the floor and apparatus. We will be looking closely at which body part we use to make these movements.

Please make sure that your child’s P.E. Kit consists of a pair of black pumps, plain black shorts or plain black jogging bottoms and a plain white t-shirt or one with the school logo. We suggest that your child brings their P.E. Kit into school when we begin the term and only take it home at the end of the term so that it can be washed and refreshed ready for the next half term. That way your child will always have their kit in school and they are prepared for every lesson.

Our P.E. lesson is every Monday and Thursday.

Our theme for this half term is ‘Dreams and Goals’, where we will discuss how it can be sometimes challenging to achieve a goal we set ourselves. Therefore, we will explore how this feels and how to manage it.

In Year 2 homework is given out each Friday and is to be returned every Wednesday. The children have spelling activities to be accessed through Spelling Shed and Maths tasks on Active Learn to complete each week. The children can also choose from the “Dungeons and Dragons!” homework menu! Click here for the – Dungeons and Dragons Homework Sheet

Homework can be presented in any way the children wish, so if they have published something using an iPad, tablet or computer please email it to us!

The children are also asked to read at least twice a week to someone at home. We ask the children to record this in their Reading Log. Reading books are changed every Monday and Thursday – whenever your child is ready for a new book. Therefore, remind your child to hand it in so that it can be organised for them.

Don’t forget that your homework and reading are monitored as part of your Assertive Mentoring profile
