Welcome back Year 1! We’re so happy to have you back at school for our final term of the year!
Here is what we’ll be learning about this term:
English
We will begin our term by reading ‘The Nigh Pirates’ by Paul Harris which is a lovely story about a boy’s adventure with a group of rough, tough little girl pirates. The children will discover a treasure chest within our school grounds and have to take part on a quest to take back our school’s treasure from those sneaky pirates. We will be using ‘Talk for Writing’ strategies to retell the story and create our own pirate stories using a story map. We will then be exploring a number of non-fiction texts to inspire our writing as we will be producing a guide on how to become a pirate. We will be focusing on applying our Phonics within our writing, punctuating sentences and our handwriting this term.
Here are some websites to help you support your child at home:
Please encourage a love of reading at home and use Reading Eggs regularly. (Reading Eggs login details are attached to the Reading Record book. Please ask a member of staff if you have any problems.) We ask that you read with your child as often as possible and sign their reading record a minimum of twice weekly in line with school policy. We will check reading records every Wednesday with homework. We will change their book twice a week, on a Monday and a Wednesday. This is to encourage more depth of comprehension and more fluency practise. Pleases return reading books and records everyday.
Maths
This term we will be following our Power Math scheme. We will cover multiplication, division, numbers 1 to 100, position, direction, fractions, time and money.

We will also be going on a very special trip to Chester Zoo where we will learn even more amazing facts about animal.
Our final topic is, identify materials where the children will build on their previous knowledge of materials. They will learn to distinguish between an object and the material from which it is made. Our main focus this term will be developing our Geography skills through our pirate topic, using map work and learning about the continents around the world. We will be completing lots of artwork and DT through the topic; designing and creating our very own pirate hats, a pastel picture of a beach landscape and many more. We will conclude our topic at the end of the year with our very own pirate party!
As part of their homework the children will complete a topic activity each week (from the pirate homework menu).

During this term we will be exploring the following question; What does it mean to belong to a faith community? We will learn about different communities and their faiths.
Computing
For the first half term the children will be practising their programming skills through the Scratch Junior app, this app is free to download at home if you wish to. After the holidays we will move onto our final computing unit where the children will learn how to create their own digital media on the laptops.
PE
The children will be doing athletics for the first half term and net and ball skills when they return after the holidays.
