Welcome to Year 1
Welcome to Year 1’s Autumn Term
Take a look at what we’ll be exploring this half term……
English
We will begin our term by reading ‘Whatever Next’ by Jill Murphy which is a lovely story about a bear’s imaginative journey to the moon. The children will make their own space rocket to use in our Role Play area where they can act out going to the moon. The children will also be reading ‘Beegu’ by Alexis Deacon which is a fictional story about an alien lost on earth. We will be using ‘Talk for Writing’ strategies to retell the story and create our own space stories using a story map. The children will be actively encouraged to use their phonics to spell words and begin to say words and sentences out loud in preparation for writing sentences. There will also be a focus on handwriting so that children can practise letter formation of upper and lower case letters.
Please encourage a love of reading at home and use Reading Eggs regularly. As children progress through Reading Eggs, they are awarded with reading certificates which we check weekly, print off in school and celebrate in class. This has proven to be a great motivator for children as they become proud and confident readers. (Reading Eggs login details are attached to the Homework books along with Google Classroom logins. Please ask a member of staff if you have any problems.)
We ask that you read with your child as often as possible and sign their reading record a minimum of twice weekly in line with school policy. We will check reading records and change easy reading books every Wednesday. We monitor reading, homework and PE kits as part of our Assertive Mentoring Scheme.
Maths
This term we will be following the school’s maths scheme, Power Maths to focus on the following objectives: –
Unit 1: Numbers to 10
- We will be working on children’s ability to recognise, represent and manipulate numbers to ten. Children will sort and group objects using different criteria. They will learn to recognise and count different representations of numbers to 10 and use a tens frame to structure and reason counting.
- We will be using vocabulary such as ‘digit’ and writing number names as words. As we count forwards and backwards, we will be using ‘one more’ as a way to describe a number increasing and ‘one less’ for a number decreasing.
- Children will use these skills to compare and order numbers to 10 using concrete and pictorial representations to support their reasoning. They will be introduced to ordinal numbers (First, second….) and use a number track to count ‘one more’ and ‘one less’.
Unit 2: Part-Whole within 10
- This is one of the most important units of work to teach in maths. Children who have a solid grasp of numbers to 10 are able to apply this knowledge to so many other areas, including numbers to 20, numbers to 50 and beyond, and addition and subtraction.
- Children will be taught how to partition numbers to 10 using part-whole model
- Children will use this knowledge of part-whole model to begin writing number sentences. Like in the above example 5+4=9 They will explore number sentences in detail to explore number facts 5+4=9 is equal to 4+5=9 is equal to 9=5+4 is equal to 9=4+5
- This work helps to secure number bonds to 10. During this unit, children begin to build this to number bonds to 20.
- They will learn symbols > more than, < less than and = equal
Unit 3 & 4: Addition and subtraction within 10
- This unit focuses on number bonds within 10 and number bonds to 10. Children will be introduced to formal addition through the idea of ‘count all’ and ‘count on’ strategies. A ‘count all’ strategy is when all parts are added together to make a whole. A ‘count on’ strategy asks children to start with a number and count on.
- Children will be introduced to the key language of subtraction and a range of scenarios in which subtraction takes place.
- Children will model each of these situations using concrete and pictorial representations: taking away cubes, crossing out pictures and counting back on a number track.

Science
The Science topic this term will be’ Identifying Materials.’
In this unit children will identify and name common types of materials including:- wood, metal, plastic, rubber, fur, towelling, nylon, wool, sponge, cotton wool, paper, card, brick, ceramics, rock and some liquids and powdered solids.
They will label, collect and group together objects made from the same material. They will state that different objects can be manufactured from the same materials. They will investigate why some materials are unsuitable for some objects and provide reasons for this.
During the unit children will be working scientifically to investigate the properties of different liquids. They will also investigate which materials are good to wrap and protect a hollow chocolate object being sent through the post.
Each pupil will get their own discovery education username and password. This has a range of fun resources that covers the whole of the curriculum.

Topic
We will be learning all about Space this term! We will be documenting all the significant events and developments in Space on our class timeline including the Apollo moon landing. We will be making our own space buggies and investigating simple mechanisms such as wheels and axels. We will investigate space using Google Earth and identify where the super telescopes are situated across the globe. We will create lots of space related art for our role play area and learn about Tim Peake, Helen Sharman and Neil Armstrong in a quest to find out what life is really like as an astronaut!

RE
During this term we will be learning all about people who are Christians and finding out about what they believe through stories in the bible. We will also be celebrating Harvest this year and attend a remote service kindly provided by St. Mary’s Church
Computing
The children will be following the ‘Teach Computing’ scheme of work and learning about computing systems and networks. During this unit, the children will about technology in the classroom and how to use it, developing keyboard, trackpad and mouse skills and how to use a computer responsibly.
PE
The children will be following the Primary PE Passport Curriculum which our Kick-start team will help us deliver this term. We will be learning how to play invasion games and learning key fundamental moving skills.
PE will take place every Wednesday and Friday this term.
Please make sure that PE kits are in school every week because we monitor this as part of our Assertive Mentoring scheme.
PSHE
Our school follows a scheme called Jigsaw and this term our Year 1 children will complete a unit called ‘Being me in my world’ which celebrates all the qualities that makes people unique. Children will get lots of opportunities to discuss and share what is good about themselves and how they want to grow in the coming year ahead.
Music
We will be exploring a unit called ‘Hey You!’ using the school’s music scheme, Charanga. We will listen and appraise a range of Hip Hop songs such as:- Hey You! by Joanna Mangona, Me, Myself And I by De La Soul, Fresh Prince Of Bel Air by Will Smith and It’s Like That by Run DMC. They will also play a range of games to find the pulse, rhythm and pace using their voices and either use recorders or glockenspiels to accompany a piece of music.
Homework
In Year 1 homework is given on a Friday and expected back every Wednesday. Children will receive either a maths or a reading task based on what we’ve been learning in class and they will choose a piece from the Space homework menu.
Children are encouraged to be as creative as they wish and can choose how to present their homework so if they have published something using an iPad, tablet or computer please email it to us!

Year 3 Autumn Term 2021
Welcome to Year 3!
We hope that you have had a fantastic summer break and are ready to start the juniors. We have loads of information for you and your parents on this page.
Autumn Term 2021
Maths:
In maths we will be continuing with Power Maths. We will be looking at place value (3 digit numbers), addition and subtraction, multiplication and division.
English:
In English our featured text will be ‘Stone Age Boy’ by Satoshi Kitamura. We will also be reading extracts from Stig of the Dump by Clive Davies and The Wild Way Home by Sophie Kirtley to support us with our writing. We will then write our own adventure story inspired by these texts and include some of the SPaG features we have been looking at in class. Other areas of reading and writing will be covered related to Black History Month and Roald Dahl day. We will then be concentrating on writing instructions based on “How to wash a Woolly Mammoth”, followed by reading and writing shape poems.
Topic: The Stone Age
Our topic this term is The Stone Age. Through our topic we will develop our historical skills by looking at what life was like in the Stone Age, studying what we can learn about the past from artefacts and finding out when the Stone Age was by looking at timelines. We will also be looking at Stone Age Art and Craft and create our own cave paintings and analyse Stone Age weapons and jewellery including spears, axes and bear tooth necklaces.
Science: Moving and Feeding
In Science the children will learn that animals including humans need the right types and amounts of nutrition to thrive and grow and that eating the wrong types and amounts can lead to health problems. They will investigate some of the health problems associated with not eating well. They will learn that we cannot make our own food and that we need to eat a varied diet and list the types of food that we need and why we need them and construct a balanced food plate. They will find out that different animals have different dietary requirements and some foods humans eat may be poisonous to animals. The children will also discuss the role of the muscles and skeleton and describe what would happen if we didnʼt have them.
Our second science topic is Light and Shadows.
The children will explore the differences between light sources and light reflectors. They will be able to describe how shadows are formed and will explore the relationship between light, objects and the formation of shadows. They will create and change shadows in the context of a puppet shadow play. They will explore the properties of materials that can cast shadows and use the scientific terms opaque, translucent and transparent to describe these materials. Finally children will demonstrate an understanding of the possible dangers to health that the Sun, as a strong source of light, holds for them and others.
Working Scientifically, children will set up simple comparative and fair tests to compare materials, and they will make systematic and careful observations of shadows.
PHSE: JIGSAW: Being Me in my World
During this ‘puzzle’ the children will be looking at their thoughts and feelings during new experiences. They will be looking at what makes them proud and how this made them feel. They will create their own personal and class targets linked to our Investors in Pupils and assess their progress in achieving them.The second puzzle is : Celebrating Difference where we look at differences between people, diversity and anti-bullying.
RE: What do different people believe about God?
In RE the children will be looking at what different people believe about God through stories, buildings and art.
PE: Basketball, Tri-golf, dance and gymnastics
In PE the children will learn games skills and dance and gymnastics
Music: BRASS
During our music lessons the children will have the opportunity to learn how to play a brass instrument with Tameside music service.
ICT:
In our ICT lessons we will be looking at Connecting Computers and Stop-frame Animations.
MFL: French
Our first theme is France and its culture. We will then look at greetings and names and learning how to count up to 20 in French, the French alphabet and colours.

- Please ensure your name is clearly written in all your school uniform.
- Please ensure your correct and full PE kit is in school all week as PE days can change in school (it will be sent home every half term to wash)
- Bring your reading book and reading diary to school every day. Sometimes a reading volunteer will choose you for extra reading.
- Please bring a school water bottle every day.
All the equipment you need is supplied for you in school. Please do not bring in your own pencils, rubbers etc from home.
PE lessons will be every Wednesday and Thursday this term. Please make sure that your child has their PE kit in school. This should be black shorts, pumps and a plain white t shirt or Corrie PE top.
Homework
Homework will be sent home every Friday and is expected to be returned to school by the following Wednesday. If all homework is completed and handed in by Wednesday you will achieve green on your assertive mentoring chart. If you hand it in later than Wednesday you will achieve yellow. If you do not compete all homework you will be given a red.
Children have maths homework which is linked to their lessons that week, topic homework from the menu and also Spelling and handwriting practise and Times Table Rockstars.
Reading books should be signed at home at least twice a week and should be in school every day, but will also be checked on Wednesdays along with the homework.

Welcome to Autumn Term in Year 5!
We hope that you all had a wonderful summer break and are ready and raring to go for a new school year. We have lots of exciting things planned this term and we are really looking forward to learning with you all this year.
PE lessons will be every Monday and Thursday. Please make sure that your child has their PE kit in school. This should be black shorts, pumps and a plain white t shirt or Corrie PE top.
Homework will be sent home every Friday and is expected to be returned to school by the following Wednesday. Children have maths homework, topic homework from the menu and also a spelling/ handwriting sheet, plus Table Rockstars.
Reading books should be signed at home at least twice a week and should be in school every day, but will also be checked on Wednesdays along with the homework.
Please find below what we will be learning about:
Autumn
Maths:
In maths we will continue using ‘Power Maths’ We will be looking at place value within 1,000,000 and addition and subtraction. We will then look at statistics and focus on graphs and tables before moving onto multiplication and division and finally area and perimeter.
English:
In English our focus will be on ‘Leon and the Place Between’ by Angela McAllister. This beautifully illustrated book tells the story of a young boy who journeys on a magical adventure to a fantasy land. The children will use this story to inspire their own narrative and we will be applying different aspects of Year 5 SPaG within our writing throughout the course of the year.
Reading:
This year, we will move to whole class guided reading. We will focus lots of our lessons around our class novel The Nowhere Emporium by Ross MacKenzie. We will also develop our comprehension skills by looking at a wide range of texts including non-fiction, poetry, newspapers and song lyrics.
Topic:
Our topic this term will be the Tudors. We will learn about Tudor Kings and Queens and what life was like during the Tudor period. We will develop our historical enquiry skills by studying a range of artefacts and discussing what they tell us about the Tudors. We will also have our very special Tudor workshop Day!
Science: Earth and Space
Our topic this half term will be Earth and Space. The children will learn about the movement of Earth, and other planets, relative to the Sun in our Solar System. They will learn about how we get seasons, the day and night, and the different phases of the moon. They will also have the opportunity to find out about how ideas about the solar system have developed and changed over time. The children will develop their working scientifically skills, by planning an enquiry using a shadow stick to look at changes over time to investigate the apparent movement of the sun across the sky.

This is the question we will be focusing on this half term. The children will consider why people do or don’t believe in God and the impact that might have on the way they live their everyday life
PE: Tennis and Hockey
The children will have the Sports Coach every Monday and will be developing their tennis skills. We will also look at hockey and practise our dribbling and defending.
ICT:
In our ICT lessons we will be looking at computing databases and creating media.
MFL: French
We will begin the year by recapping our learning from year 3 and 4. We will then move onto looking at emotions and learning body parts in French.

The children will also be set a piece of maths work linked to their learning in class and a handwriting sheet.
Home Reading: Reading a school book is part of your homework. Children should read at least twice week and signed by an adult. Reading books will get checked every Wednesday. Your child’s reading diary must be signed before a new book is given and all activities completed (if applicable)
REMEMBER: all homework needs to be completed each week and handed in by each Wednesday to achieve GREEN for Homework in your Assertive Mentoring. If you hand it in on Thursday you will achieve YELLOW and after that you will achieve RED for that week.

Year 6. Autumn 2021
Hello! It’s me again!
I think we must be breaking records and we have been together for so long that I am beginning to think I might be following you to high school next year! I am really excited for everything to hopefully get back to something approaching normality, (whatever that is!) this year. I know what amazing things you are all capable of and because of that, we can get straight into all the learning and fascinating things that Year 6 has in store for us.
Just a few notes to make everyone aware of when things will be happening:
PE will be every Monday and Friday afternoon, so the children need their kits in school on these days. Just a reminder that school P.E. kit comprises of a white t-shirt, black shorts and trainers or pumps and if P.E. is taking place outside and the weather is cold, the children are allowed to wear dark jogging bottoms and trainers. All jewellery must be removed for P.E. If the children cannot remove the jewellery themselves, it is best if they do not wear it on the PE days.
Homework will still be sent out each Friday and must be returned by the following Wednesday at the latest and reading books should be taken home and signed by an adult at least twice a week.
Handwriting and Presentation:
During this first half term, we are going to really focus on our handwriting skills and development and the presentation of the work in our books. We will be following our school handwriting scheme with the children and will be expecting them to use this and be as neat as possible in all aspects of their work. We will also be sending examples of the scheme home so that parents are able to support the children with their presentation when they are completing their homework as well, where we will also continue to expect equally high standards.
Topic: The first topic we are covering this year is North America. We will be looking at lots of Geographical skills during this topic and will be finding out lots about all the different countries and diverse cultures within this fascinating continent. Part of the weekly homework in Year 6 will again be to complete some topic based activities and the homework menu will again be used to choose activities from.
English: This term we will be looking at a range of writing styles. We will be looking in detail at the King Kong book by Anthony Browne and will be creating stories and newspaper reports around this.
We will also be looking at a video called ‘The Eye of the Storm’ and will be completing our own narratives based around this.
In SPaG lessons we will be revising all areas of punctuation and continuing to work on all the aspects of grammar to make your written work better. Remember the children have weekly spellings to learn, using Spelling Shed.
Maths: In our maths lessons we will be covering the Year 6 objectives from the maths Curriculum. You will be continuing to work hard to achieve your targets in a variety of aspects of maths, trying to become more fluent and developing your reasoning and problem solving skills. We will be focussing on the using and applying aspect of maths through problem solving, reasoning, explaining and investigating. You will also be continuing to learn all your times tables so that you know all the multiplication and division facts to 12 x 12 as quickly as possible as this is so valuable when working in many areas of maths.
Science:
Our Bodies: In this unit children will learn how to identify and explain the different systems which are constantly at work within the human body. We will look in detail at some of these systems including the circulatory system and we will look at how the heart works to circulate our blood around the body.
Changing Circuits: In this unit, the children will learn how to create and develop increasingly difficult and complex circuits, building on the work they did in year 3.
Computing– We will continue our work on coding, using the Scratch 3 program. We will also continue on creating and editing videos. Computing will also be used in a cross-curricular manner too in a variety of other curriculum areas to enhance learning. We will be using Book Creator, Powerpoint, imovie and Keynote to present our work in other subjects in different ways.
Homework-
The children will continue to get English and maths homework every week. We will always set the homework on a Friday and it must be brought back into school by the following Wednesday. This will be set on Google Classroom every week or paper copies can be made available. The children will also be bringing home their reading books every day and it is vitally important that they read every day. We are really working on the children’s comprehension skills so it would be great if you could ask them questions about their books every time you read with them.
We keep track of the homework and reading on charts in the classroom that are linked to the assertive mentoring scheme that we use in school. In order to achieve a green mark their homework MUST be completed and handed in on WEDNESDAY.
