Welcome Back Year 5!

Hope you’ve all had a brilliant holiday and are ready and raring to go again. We are really looking forward to this half term and we hope you are too! Summer Term 1 is a very busy one, so here’s what we’ll be up to!

As usual, we’ve got lots of exciting activities planned in English. Our focus is on writing a narrative. We will be basing our work around the text ‘The Lost Thing’ by Shaun Tan. The focus of this book is working together as a community and finding your own identity. We will be analysing different texts and video clips to help inspire our own writing, so that we can carry on being awesome authors too!

We will develop our SPAG knowledge through continuing to learn about the various word classes and different spelling patterns, including the Y5/6 word list. We will be focussing on how to apply all our SPAG work into our own writing.

We will continue to develop our skills in the 4 operations and our understanding of Place Value, Decimals, Percentages and Fractions and Measurement. We will be focussing on the Using and Applying aspect of Maths through reasoning challenges. We will also be developing the use of number lines as a strategy to help us with calculations.

Please remember to carry on practising your times tables up to 12×12.

Our topic this half term is Separating Mixtures. We will be carrying out investigations to test the properties of different materials.

Our topic for this half term is The Mayans. We will be learning all about the impact the Mayans had on the Modern World and finding out about the Mayan gods.

We will be continuing to work on RSE scheme ‘Jigsaw’ and discussing issues which are important to us and help us work together as a team. This half term’s focus is ‘Relationships.’

Computing – App Designers

We will be researching various Apps and how they work. We will develop a design for our own App.

We will be looking at Pop Art artists such as Andy Warhol and creating images in the same style.

We will continue to use our music scheme Charanga with a focus on ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel Air’

We will be learning about Islam and ‘What it means to be a Muslim today.’
