Summer Term in year 3

Summer term in year 3!

Welcome to the final term of year 3, we have a busy and action-packed term ahead! We will be celebrating World Culture Day on May 21st, where the children will learn about the wealth of cultures we have in school. Sports and Health week will be held on w/b 6th June, where the children will get to try lots of new sports!

IMPORTANT NOTES:

PE lessons will be every Monday and Thursday. Please make sure that your child has their PE kit in school. This should be black shorts, pumps and a plain white t shirt or Corrie PE top.

 

Homework will be sent home every Friday and is expected to be returned to school by the following Wednesday.

 

Reading books should be signed at home at least twice a week and should be in school every day, but will also be checked on Wednesdays along with the homework.

 

Please find below what we will be learning about:

Maths:

In maths we will continue using Power Maths and will start the term by focusing on fractions before looking at time. Please practise telling the time as much as possible with your child at home. We will then learn about angles and properties of shapes before moving onto mass and capacity.

English:

In English, we will start the term by looking at Escape from Pompeii by Christina Balit, which tells the true story of the volcanic eruption in Pompeii in 79AD. Children will look at writing descriptive recounts of the volcano erupting before writing their own newspaper reports about the eruption. We will then look at The Tear Thief by Carol-Ann Duffy about a thief who each night collects the tears of children who cry. We will use this story as inspiration to write a persuasive poster and a letter of explanation. We will continue to embed year 3 SPaG throughout all of our writing.

Topic: Extreme Earth

Our topic this term is Extreme Earth. We will look at the structure of the Earth and will be investigating what causes volcanoes and earthquakes. We will then look at the impact of a natural disaster and what to do during a natural disaster. We will learn about other extreme weather such as tornadoes and tsunamis and identify patterns in weather around the world.

 

Science: Plants and Rocks and Soils

We will continue learning about what plants need and the functions of all the different parts of the plant. We will then move on to learning about Rocks and soils. The children will recognise that below the surface of Earth is rock which they may not be able to see. They will understand that over time rocks have been broken down to form smaller rocks, pebbles, stones and eventually soils. They will recognise that there are different rocks and different soils which have different properties and appearances. Children will identify, name and describe different rocks. They will compare and group different rocks and soils based on appearance and properties.

 

PHSE: JIGSAW: Relationships and Changing Me

The children will learn how babies grow, outside and inside body changes, family stereotypes and look ahead to next year in school and further as they grow up.

RE: What does it mean to be a Hindu in Britain today?

In RE the children will learn more about the Hindu faith and the different beliefs and traditions. We will then look at what it means for people being a Hindu in modern Britain.

PE: Basket Ball and athletics

In PE the children will have the sports coaches on a Monday to learn basketball skills before playing short games against each other in teams. We will also have athletics on a Thursday in preparation for sports day.

Music: BRASS

During our music lessons the children will have the opportunity to learn how to play a brass instrument with Tameside music service.

ICT: We will continue with our work on programming including using Turtle Logo and Scratch. We will then move onto Creating Media using a desk top publishing program.

MFL: French

We will complete our work on months and the date, then look at The Very Hungry Caterpillar story in French. After that we will look at the topics of My Family and On the Farm.

HOME LEARNING LINKS / IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER 

Every term the children will receive a ‘Take Away Homework’ a menu of homework activities linked to our Topic. If you would like to email us your child’s homework please email to admin@corrie.tameside.sch FAO Miss Wood / Mrs Lynch.

 

The children will also be set a piece of maths work online linked to their learning in class. If your child does not have access to the internet, please ask for a worksheet instead. The children will also have handwriting/ spelling practice each week.

 

Home Reading: Reading a school book is part of your homework. Children should read at least twice week and signed by an adult. Reading books will get checked every Wednesday. Reading books will be changed on a Monday and Thursday. Your child’s reading diary must be signed before a new book is given and all activities completed (if applicable)

REMEMBER: all homework needs to be completed each week and handed in by each Wednesday to achieve GREEN for Homework in your Assertive Mentoring. If you hand it in on Thursday you will achieve YELLOW and after that you will achieve RED for that week.

  • Please ensure your name is clearly written in all your school uniform. We have a permanent marker if you need to write your child’s name in their jumper etc.
  • Please ensure your correct and full PE kit is in school all week as PE days can change in school (it will be sent home every half term to wash)
  • Bring your reading book and reading diary to school every day. Sometimes a reading volunteer will choose you for extra reading.
  • Please bring a school water bottle every day.

All the equipment you need is supplied for you in school. Please do not bring in your own pencils, rubbers etc from home.

The Egyptian Cinderella- Year 3 writing

Here are some extracts from the amazing stories some of the children in 3W have created…

The lovely master walked over to Rhodapis as she sat admiring the scenery on the riverbank. He gave Rhodapis a bracelet which was so delicate and precious. As Rhodps put the bracelet on her arm it sparkled and shone in the sun. the bracelet had magical gems coloured like a rainbow. As rhodapis sat admiring her bracelet from the master she felt the gentle stares and loud giggles from the slave girls appearing from tree. The slave girls was very jelous and stood sniggering at Rhodapis as they laughed they told her to get back to her chores right away.

As rhodapis walked away across the river bank, she gently looked back and seen the girls getting on the barge, they laughed and shouted “we will enjoy the party” – Rhodapis became upset and was trying her hardest to hold back the tears. She was devasted she couldn’t go to the party.

Rhodapis arrived back and started doing her chores she was devasted she couldn’t go to the party and meet the Pharoah.she thought I cant do this anymore and went back to the riverbank to finish her art work.

As she sat there drawing the beautiful flowers that waved in the breeze, a slithery snake in the shadow of the grass appeared sniffing and slithering towards Rhodapis and snatched her beautiful shining bracelet from her arm and slittered away quickly. Rhodapis jumped up from the grass and shouted “come back please come back – my beautiful shining bracelet” – her eyes filled with tears and she bent towards the floor and burst out sobbing. As she lifted her head she seen the snake in the far distance travelling along the grass in the direction the other slaves girls travelled towards the party.

Angelica sank down beside the river and felt very gloomy. Tears filled her eyes when she thought of the exciting times the servant girls would be enjoying at the ball.  she took off her magnificent headdress and put it on the ground beside her.  Angelica started to feel better when she saw the sunlight make the jewels on her headdress sparkle and shine, the reflections shone on the water.  As Angelica paddled her dainty feet in the river she noticed  a flock of magpies had appeared and began flying around.  Angelica was fascinated by the way they swarmed in circles when suddenly one of the magpies swooped down and grabbed her precious headdress.  Angelica shouted with fear to the magpie to stop and go away.  She flapped her arms and tried to distract the bird so it would drop her headdress but it didn’t work.

 

Angelica was devastated, she could never replace the beautiful headdress and she desperately looked  to see where the magpies had gone and  tried to follow them along the river bank hoping the bird would lose its grip and drop her precious belongings.  The magpie soared higher and higher and soon all Angelica could see was the sparkle of the beautiful gems glinting in the sunlight as the magpies disappeared from sight.

 

Angelica was distraught, she had never owned anything so stunning and now it was gone.

 

Whilst Angelica was heartbroken about losing her precious headdress the magpie had flown straight towards the sound of the ball.  The magpie could see so many shining and sparkling jewels it was spoilt for choice.  It dropped the head dress straight into the lap of Prince Alfredo who jumped up with astonishment.

Once upon a time in the beautiful land of Egypt there lived a talented girl called Rhodahpis.When she was a little girl she was sadly stolen by agressive pirates from her home in Greece, and sold as a slave in Egypt. Egypt was an extremely hot country and had lots of dry, rocky desert. The raging, bright sun shone all over Egypt and its nation, it gave the dessert a golden, brown glow and made the river and sea glisten like diamonds. The river Nile gently flowed throughout Egypt, people lived next to it for water ,to grow their green crops and they also used it for travel. By the time Rhodahpis settled into Egypt some girls came into her life, they were servent girls too.They loved mocking her because she was different for example they said haha look at her with lots of chores to do they did this because her eyes were as blue as the Nile and theirs were as brown as chocolate, her hair was golden and got tangles in the breeze and theirs were as dark as panthers and hung straight down, her skin burned red in the hot sun of Egypt and theirs glowed copper.When everyone was asleep and Rhodahpis was alone dancing to her tiny, red snake and the singing birds she would start to smile and she felt like she owned the world.

As that evening approached when Rhodopis had finished her chores she went down to the forest with her animal friends. She danced and sang the night away, but what she didn’t realise is her master was approaching. “ What a beautiful song” gasps the master. “ For this deserves a reward,” the master said. The following day as Rhodopis awoke, there she saw a pristine tiara with beautiful glistening gems lying beside her pillow. The other servant girl got site of this and was not happy, as they had never been given a gift before. “ Why would the master give it to her, she’s just a ugly slave” one the the servant girls grunted. With that the servant girls made sure Rhodopis was too busy to sing and dance again.

 

The next morning Kipa announced, “ Today we will travel to Memphis, where the Pharaoh is to hold a ball with a feast like no other.” “ There will be dancing and singing,” one of the servant girls responded. Just as Rhodopis was about to smile, Kipa said “ sorry Rhodopis but you’re not invited, someone has to stay behind to do the chores.” as tears built up in her eyes, the servant girls rush off to get ready.

Out of nowhere a huge shadow appeared over Rhodopis head she glanced up to see a magnificent eagle gliding above her it was such a beautiful sight but suddenly the eagle swooped down that fast Rhodipis felt the breeze off its wings sweep across her face and to her horror she seen its giant claws in front of her she closed her eyes out of fear. unbeknown to Rhodopis her exquisite shawl had slipped off her shoulders and as she looked up to her dismay the eagle had grasped it between its claws and was flying off down the Nile, her heart sunk and all she could do was watch as the eagle flew further away she was devastated.

 

The eagle flew along the Nile all the way to Memphis where the pharaoh was holding his banquet. Amasis was just about to address his guests when suddenly the eagle dropped the beautiful shawl and it landed on his knee.” What a beautiful garment, this must be a sign sent from the gods” proclaimed Amasis I will marry the fair maiden that this belongs too.  Amasis summoned his guards and told them to dismiss his guests he was to start his quest to find his bride immediately.

 

The Pharaoh set off on his journey on his quest to find his queen.  He trudged across the sweltering hot desserts where the imposing pyramids towered over the golden sea of sand and hiked the steep cliffs to search near the eagles nests.

Girls and women rich and poor would swarm the Pharaoh wherever he ventured but none did the shawl that he had clutched in his hand seem to fit or look quite right. The more he searched the more determined the Pharaoh became in his pursuit. He summoned the royal barge and pledged he would travel to every city along The Nile. The roaring of the trumpet alerted the people he had arrived. But sadly he still hasn’t tracked down his queen.

Year 3 Spring Term 2021

Hello everyone and welcome back to spring term in year 3.

Maths:

We will continue to use our new scheme Power Maths in school and start by looking at multiplication and division. We will then move onto measurement by learning to add and subtract amounts of money, we will also look at bar charts and pictograms and learn to measure, compare, add and subtract different lengths. They will then finish the term with a unit on fractions.

English:

We will start the half term by focusing on narrative writing inspired by The Egyptian Cinderella by Shirley Climo, a traditional tale and alternative version to Cinderella. We will start by comparing different versions of a traditional story and then write our own narratives and edit our story. We will then use a short film ‘Tadeo Jones’ to inspire diary writing.

 

Topic: Ancient Egypt

Our topic this term is going to be Ancient Egypt and we are going to find out all about this fascinating period of history. We will be doing lots of activities in our Kagan books, looking at Egyptian artefacts and discovering what life what like in the Egyptian times.

 

Science: Magnets and Forces followed by What Plants Need

The children will learn about forces, friction and magnetic attraction. They will learn about forces in the context of pushing and pulling, and will identify different actions as pushes or pulls. The children will work scientifically and collaboratively to investigate friction, by exploring the movement of a toy car over different surfaces. They will work in a hands on way to identify magnetic materials. They will conduct an investigation into the strength of different types of magnet.

In the plants unit children will explore what plants need to grow well. They will compare how plants grow in different soils and explore how fertilisers can be used to improve growth. Children will investigate the amount of water needed to help a leafy pot plant grow well. They will also investigate how space affects plant growth by comparing how well grass seeds grow with more or less space.

 

PHSE: JIGSAW Dreams and goals 

During this half term, children will look at understanding what their dreams and goals are and look at how to achieve their aspirations.

 

RE: Why do people pray?

In RE the children will be looking how and why people pray across a range of different religions.

 

PE: Invasion Games

The children will now have the sports coach working with them on a Monday afternoon. They will be looking at invasion games and learning different skills to apply in a range of games. They will then apply these skills by learning to play basketball and play matches against each other.

Music: BRASS

During our music lessons the children will have the opportunity to learn how to play a brass instrument with Tameside music service. Music lessons are every Wednesday. If your child would like to take their brass instrument home to practice, a deposit can be paid to the office allowing them to take it home.

 

Computing:

 This term we will continue or work on word processing using the laptops. We will move onto programming using Logo and Scratch.

 

MFL: French

We will be developing our language skills this half term by looking at colours and the french alphabet.

HOME LEARNING LINKS / IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER 

Homework is set on a Friday and due the following Wednesday. We provide the children with a menu of choices for topic homework activities that they can carry out during the term. They still only need to complete one piece per week. We will also continue to set maths homework online via Google Classroom each week (a paper version of this is available). Children will also have handwriting/ spelling homework this term.

We hope that you have had a fantastic summer break and are ready and raring to go.

Take Away The Stone Age

Please find below what we will be learning about:

Autumn 1

Maths:

In maths we will be starting our new scheme ‘Power Maths.’ We will be looking at place value (3 digit numbers) and addition and subtraction.

English:

In English our featured text will be ‘Stone Age Boy’ by Satoshi Kitamura. We will also be reading extracts from Stig of the Dump by Clive Davies and The Wild Way Home by Sophie Kirtley to support us with our writing. We will then write our own adventure story inspired by these texts and include some of the SPaG features we have been looking at in class.

Topic: The Stone Age

Our topic this term is The Stone Age. Through our topic we will develop our historical skills by looking at what life was like in the Stone Age, studying what we can learn about the past from artefacts and finding out when the Stone Age was by looking at timelines. We will also be looking at Stone Age Art and Craft and create our own cave paintings and analyse Stone Age weapons and jewellery including spears, axes and bear tooth necklaces.

 

Science: Moving and Feeding

In Science the children will learn that animals including humans need the right types and amounts of nutrition to thrive and grow and that eating the wrong types and amounts can lead to health problems. They will investigate some of the health problems associated with not eating well. They will learn that we cannot make our own food and that we need to eat a varied diet and list the types of food that we need and why we need them and construct a balanced food plate. They will find out that different animals have different dietary requirements and some foods humans eat may be poisonous to animals.  The children will also discuss the role of the muscles and skeleton and describe what would happen if we didnʼt have them.

PHSE: JIGSAW: COVID Recovery Program and Being Me in my World

We will start the year by completing the Jigsaw ‘COVID recovery program.’ We will look at how routines have changed in school and how to keep ourselves safe. We will also look at worries that we may have and what we can do to help. After that we will look at ‘Being Me in my World.’ During this ‘puzzle’ the children will be looking at their thoughts and feelings during new experiences. They will be looking at what makes them proud and how this made them feel. They will create their own personal and class targets linked to our Investors in Pupils and assess their progress in achieving them.

 

RE: What do different people believe about God?

In RE the children will be looking at what different people believe about God through stories, buildings and art.

PE: Games and Gymnastics

In PE the children will practice their throwing and receiving ball skills in games and also look at shapes in gymnastics.
