Summer Year 1

Welcome to Year 1’s Summer Term

Take a look at what we’ll be exploring this term………

English

We will begin the term by exploring a range of fictional texts relating to our theme which is all about Pirates (ooooarghh!)     The first book we’ll be reading is called ‘The Night Pirates’ by Peter Harris & Deborah Allwright which is a fantastic pirate adventure story about a boy called Tom who joins a crew of girl pirates in a quest to find treasure across the high seas. We’ll also be using a book called ‘Molly Rogers Pirate Girl’ by Cornelia Funke to support our understanding of this genre including: story structure and language features. We’ll use ‘Talk for Write’ strategies to retell the story and innovate our writing by using a story map. Later on this term we’ll be reading some pirate poetry including ‘Pirates’ by Valerie Bloom to inspire our own poetry writing. We will also be learning to write instructions on how to make our very own pirate hat.

Maths

Mulitiplication and Division

Building upon the counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s work we’ve completed during the Spring term, we’ll be introducing the concept of multiplication and division through learning to double, half (make equal groups) and making simple arrays. We will also introduce fractions by learning about how some shapes can be split into equal halves and quarters.

Position and Direction

We will be exploring position and direction by using key vocabulary: ‘quarter turn’, half a turn’, ‘three quarters of a turn’ and ‘whole turn’.

Numbers to 100

Building upon our numbers to 50 work, we’ll be learning to count to 100, exploring number patterns using number grids,  ordering and sequencing numbers and learning how to apply our existing knowledge of number bonds to numbers up to 100.

Time

We will continue to review our learning about: days of the week, months of the year and seasons. During this unit we’ll be learning to use new vocabulary: before and after, learning how to use a calendar, how to tell the time to the hour and half hour and how to write time.

Money

We’ll be recognising and counting coins : 1p, 2p, 5p, 20p, 50p £1 & £2 and recognising notes: £5, £10, £20 & £50

Science

This term’s topic is all about ‘Plants’ and we’ll be learning to recognise the common features, similarities and differences between plants and trees. We’ll learn about the basic structure of a variety of common flowering plants and how to identify, name and describe the main parts of a plant, including trees. We will be learning the meaning of ‘evergreen’ and ‘desiduous’ and we’ll grow our own plants which the children can observe throughout the term. This year, Corrie Primary & Nursery School is entering the Tatton Park Schools garden competition and each year group is growing plants so that they can contribute to our competition entry. Fingers crossed!

We will also be finishing our unit on ‘Changing Seasons’. The children have been learning about each season throughout the year and have already completed some investigations in school to find out about the weather. The children will be exploring nature during the summer term through a series of outdoor lessons including our recent introduction of Forest school. We will finish the unit by completing our seasonal data strip and comparing/contrasting information across the four seasons. Hopefully we’ll have time to arrange a lovely summer walk down to the river.

Topic

‘Ooooarhhh me hearties’ and ‘Shiver Me Timbers’. Our topic this term is learning all about pirates and treasure! We will be learning about who pirates were and when & why they sailed around the world. To do this we’ll be identifying and learning about the world’s oceans and compare/contrast our own town of Denton with a town on the Carribean Islands. We will be learning some basic map skills and complete a local Geographical study. Children will also learn about some famous pirates including the notorious English pirate, ‘Blackbeard’. We will be using our DT skills to make pirate hats, bandanas and flags!

We’ll conclude our ‘Pirates’ unit with an exciting end of year Pirate Party!

Keep an eye out for our Pirates themed Homework menu. Children need to complete one piece of homework per week from the menu.

RE

This term we will be studying a unit titled, ‘What does it mean to belong to a faith community?’ Children will think and explore what belonging means to them. We will will learn about how religious people show they belong to their faith community, about the ways babies are welcomed in religions faiths and the promises made at weddings. Children will think about their own network of belonging and how we all belong to someone.

Computing

The children will follow the ‘Teach Computing’ scheme of work and this term will be learning how to create media using digital writing. They will learn how to use a keyboard, how to add and delete information, explore the tool bar and change information using choices that they can explain to others.

Later in the term they will continue with the creative media unit by learning how to use a computer to digitally paint. They will learn about the tools available to draw and paint using freehand, how to draw and paint lines & shape, how to select the size of paintbrushes to create different effects and use the skills learnt to create a piece of art in the style of an artist.

Music

Following our Charanga scheme, children will be following a unit called, ‘Your Imagination’ followed by a unit called, ‘Reflect, Rewind & Replay’. Children will learn to sing a song throughout the unit which they will perform at the end of the unit. Children will also play the Glockenspiel and recorder to accompany the song they’ve learnt. Children will listen and appraise a range of songs throughout both units using: Pitch, pulse & rhythm and tempo to describe, compare & contrast the pieces of music.

PSHE

Our Jigsaw topics for this term are ‘Relationships’ and ‘Changing Me’. In ‘Relationships’ we will be learning about families and how they can be diverse, friendships and what good qualities we look for in a friend, appropriate ways to greet friends and people who can help us in our school community.

In ‘Changing Me’ we will look at the life cycles of animals and humans, identify ways that our bodies have changed since being a baby, identify girl and boy parts of the body using scientific vocabulary and discuss changing and growing as part of our development.

Please note that there will be a dedicated parents/carers meeting to discuss and inform you about the lessons in our ‘Changing Me’ unit.

PE

The children will continue to follow the ‘Primary Passport Curriculum’ which the KickStart team will support us to deliver. In the first half term, children will be learning about Athletics with a focus on how to run and jump using different styles of jumping. They will also learn to throw a javelin. In the last half term, children will be developing their invasion games skills by learning to: dribble a ball with either hand, receiving and trapping a ball, passing a ball using bounce and combining a jump with passing a ball.

At Corrie we monitor reading, homework and PE kits as part of our Assertive Mentoring Scheme.

PE will take place on Monday and Wednesday this term.

Please make sure that PE kits are in school all week, every week as we may change sessions and because we monitor having a kit to wear as part of our Assertive Mentoring scheme.

Reading

Please encourage a love of reading at home and use Reading Eggs regularly. As children progress through Reading Eggs, they are awarded with reading certificates which we check weekly, print off in school and celebrate in class. This has proven to be a great motivator for children as they become proud and confident readers. (Reading Eggs login details are attached to the Homework books along with Google Classroom logins. Please ask a member of staff if you have any problems.)

We ask that you read with your child as often as possible and sign their reading record a minimum of twice weekly for each book in line with school policy.

We will send home two ‘reading’ books each week:

The first is a ‘phonically decodable’ book. This just means that with practice children should be able to read the words by ‘sounding out’ (saying each letters sound and then blending them together to read the word). This book will be closely matched with the phonics your child is learning at school. We will send this book home with your child until they can recall the letter sound matches and use blending to read the words to you.

The second book is a ‘read to me’ book. This will be changed every week. This book will contain words your child may not be able to decode using their phonics. You should read this book to them encouraging them to point to the words as you say them, joining in where they can. This will build your child’s sight vocabulary.

We will check reading records and change reading books as appropriate once per week every Wednesday. Howeverplease make sure your child has their reading books and diary in school every day as we sometimes have opportunity to do extra reading or to change books more frequently.

SPRING YEAR 1

Welcome to Year 1’s Spring Term

Take a look at what we’ll be exploring this term……

English

We will begin our term by reading and exploring features of Non-fiction using the information books:

Dinosaurs: First Facts by Charlie Gardner and First Dinosaur Encyclopaedia: A First Reference Book for Children (DK First Reference). We will look at the role of titles, diagrams, labels and captions in non-fiction. We will use a range of non-fiction books about dinosaurs to research real dinosaurs and then imagine we are palaeontologists and dinosaur experts and produce our own non-chronological report about an amazing dinosaur we have discovered.

Later in the term we explore the story Dinosaurs and all that rubbish by Michael Foreman. This cautionary tale will be used to stimulate discussion about the extinction of the dinosaurs and what we can learn about looking after our world to avoid our own extinction! We will focus on describing settings as we write our own retelling of the story. Finally, we will read and write dinosaur inspired poems to perform using the books Dinosaur Roar by Paul & Henrietta Stickland and Saturday Night at the Dinosaur Stomp by Carol Shields to explore language play such as rhyme and alliteration and give us inspiration for our own work.

Phonics

Our Phonic work this term will continue to Revise Phase 4 (using the Phase 3 sounds to read and spell more complex words). We will be learning new Phase 5 sounds which will introduce the children to the idea of alternative graphemes (the same sound being made in different words by different letters e.g. /igh/ as in night and /ie/ as in pie).

Science

In Science this term we will be going animal mad! The Science topics following the school’s Science Bug scheme are ‘Parts of Animals’   and ‘Types of Animals’.

In the ‘Parts of Animals’   unit we will name and locate parts of our bodies, including our sense organs. We will learn the functions of the sense organs, identifying familiar scents, textures, tastes and sounds. We will name parts of the bodies of other animals including those of fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and other mammals, and will learn to use species specific vocabulary, e.g. fin, wing, paw. We will describe, compare and contrast two different animals.

In the ‘Types of Animals’ unit we will recognise that different animals live in the local environment and name some of them. We will learn to recognise similarities and differences within and between animals, classifying familiar animals according to their characteristics. We will gather information on animals and present the data in tables, Carroll diagrams and bar charts, making simple interpretations of these using them to answer and generate questions.

Each pupil will get their own discovery education username and password. This has a range of fun resources that covers the whole of the curriculum.

Topic

Watch out… the dinosaurs are coming! In our Kagan topic this term we explore the giants of the Jurrassic. We will be placing the Age of the Dinosaurs on a historic world timeline. We investigate the science of Palaeontology… fossil hunting! We will learn about Britain’s own Fossil hunting superstar Mary Anning who was discovering evidence of prehistoric creatures at the same age as Year 1 children! We will look at how the geography of the Earth has changed and where in the world the most exciting dinosaur finds have been made. In DT we will be making our own dinosaur puppets and investigating simple lever mechanisms and joins. In art we will look at junk model sculpture to create our own imaginary Jurrasic creatures. We will learn how to challenge ourselves, break down our goals into smaller steps, keep going and celebrate our and others achievements. Throughout we will reflect on and name the feelings that this journey provokes in us.

In ‘Healthy Me’ we will learn the difference between healthy and unhealthy. We will explore healthy choices and how to make them. We will look at how we can begin to help ourselves if we feel poorly and how we can help prevent being poorly. We will look at being safe around roads and keeping our amazing bodies safe. We will learn there are adults that can help us to be safe and healthy and we can help them to do that.

Music

We will be exploring units called ‘In The Groove’ and ‘Round and Round’ using the school’s music scheme, Charanga.

For the unit’ In The Groove’ we will learn a very easy song and then explore how it can be performed in six different styles; Blues, Baroque, Latin, Bhangra, Folk and Funk. We will listen and learn a different style of In The Groove each week. We will also listen to and appraise a well-known song in that week’s style.

For the unit ‘Round and Round’ our learning is focused around one song: Round And Round, a Bossa Nova in a Latin style. Through it we will consolidate and develop our learning about musical elements like pulse and pitch. We will practice performing vocals, body percussion accompaniment and glockenspiels. Each week we will to other songs in other styles: Livin’ La Vida Loca (Latin/Pop) by Ricky Martin, March Of The Empire (Film music) by John Williams, It Had Better Be Tonight (Latin/Big Band Jazz) by Michael Bublé, Why Don’t You (Big Band/Dance) by Gramophonedzie , Oye Como Va (Latin/Jazz) by Santana

Reading Books and Maths Homework

Hello Year 1 Parents and Carers,

Hope everyone is keeping well. We just wanted to update you with a couple of changes to reading books and maths homework.

Reading

Each child will be issued with two reading books per week to be read at home. The first easy reading book will be a fully decodable phonics book which will be linked to the phonics phase and sounds that your child needs to secure when reading. This book maybe repeated as a way of consolidating their phonics knowledge. Once they are secure and confident with using these phonemes to decode when reading, they will move to next stage.

The second reading book will be from the Oxford Reading Tree range (Biff, Kipper, Chip and Floppy). The idea is that you read the book to or with your child as a way to familiarise them with tricky words, common exception words and high frequency words that are not always decodable.

Maths

We are going to use White Rose Maths for our homework activity each week. Each piece of homework will have a clip to watch and worksheet to complete. The easiest way to do this, is to use Google Classroom. We will enclose your child’s login details in their homework books this week.

Most of you were able to access Google Classroom last year due to lockdown and your login details remain the same but we have changed class so you will need to accept the new invitation. Once you accept, you can access the homework electronically.

We recognise that some people may experience difficulty with this so for the next few weeks, we will post the maths clip on this page and a paper copy of the worksheet will be stuck into homework books. Please let us know if you experience any difficulties getting onto Google Classroom and we can help you. year1@corrie.tameside.sch.uk

Here’s this week’s maths homework clip.

Many Thanks,

Year 1 Team

Welcome to Year 1

Welcome to Year 1’s Autumn Term

Take a look at what we’ll be exploring this half term……

English

We will begin our term by reading ‘Whatever Next’ by Jill Murphy which is a lovely story about a bear’s imaginative journey to the moon. The children will make their own space rocket to use in our Role Play area where they can act out going to the moon. The children will also be reading ‘Beegu’ by Alexis Deacon which is a fictional story about an alien lost on earth. We will be using ‘Talk for Writing’ strategies to retell the story and create our own space stories using a story map. The children will be actively encouraged to use their phonics to spell words and begin to say words and sentences out loud in preparation for writing sentences. There will also be a focus on handwriting so that children can practise letter formation of upper and lower case letters.

Maths

This term we will be following the school’s maths scheme, Power Maths to focus on the following objectives: –

Unit 1: Numbers to 10

  • We will be working on children’s ability to recognise, represent and manipulate numbers to ten. Children will sort and group objects using different criteria. They will learn to recognise and count different representations of numbers to 10 and use a tens frame to structure and reason counting.
  • We will be using vocabulary such as ‘digit’ and writing number names as words. As we count forwards and backwards, we will be using ‘one more’ as a way to describe a number increasing and ‘one less’ for a number decreasing.
  • Children will use these skills to compare and order numbers to 10 using concrete and pictorial representations to support their reasoning. They will be introduced to ordinal numbers (First, second….) and use a number track to count ‘one more’ and ‘one less’.

Unit 2: Part-Whole within 10

  • This is one of the most important units of work to teach in maths. Children who have a solid grasp of numbers to 10 are able to apply this knowledge to so many other areas, including numbers to 20, numbers to 50 and beyond, and addition and subtraction.
  • Children will be taught how to partition numbers to 10 using part-whole model
  • Children will use this knowledge of part-whole model to begin writing number sentences. Like in the above example 5+4=9 They will explore number sentences in detail to explore number facts 5+4=9 is equal to 4+5=9 is equal to 9=5+4 is equal to 9=4+5
  • This work helps to secure number bonds to 10. During this unit, children begin to build this to number bonds to 20.
  • They will learn symbols > more than, < less than  and  = equal

Unit 3 & 4: Addition and subtraction within 10

  • This unit focuses on number bonds within 10 and number bonds to 10. Children will be introduced to formal addition through the idea of ‘count all’ and ‘count on’ strategies. A ‘count all’ strategy is when all parts are added together to make a whole. A ‘count on’ strategy asks children to start with a number and count on.
  • Children will be introduced to the key language of subtraction and a range of scenarios in which subtraction takes place.
  • Children will model each of these situations using concrete and pictorial representations: taking away cubes, crossing out pictures and counting back on a number track.

Science

The Science topic this term will be’ Identifying Materials.’

In this unit children will identify and name common types of materials including:- wood, metal, plastic, rubber, fur, towelling, nylon, wool, sponge, cotton wool, paper, card, brick, ceramics, rock and some liquids and powdered solids.

They will label, collect and group together objects made from the same material. They will state that different objects can be manufactured from the same materials. They will investigate why some materials are unsuitable for some objects and provide reasons for this.

During the unit children will be working scientifically to investigate the properties of different liquids. They will also investigate which materials are good to wrap and protect a hollow chocolate object being sent through the post.

Each pupil will get their own discovery education username and password. This has a range of fun resources that covers the whole of the curriculum.
