Spring 2

Welcome back!

The team in Year 2 are really looking forward to working hard this half term in the run up to the Easter Break!

Have a look through below to find out a little about what we will be exploring this half term.

English

We will be starting the half term off by exploring a range of poetry from different authors, including Pie Corbett, to inspire our own Dragon Poetry. Later through the half term we will be imagining what other creatures may be living in our Hulme Woods, including mythical creatures like Roald Dahl’s Minpins!

Over this half term we will be learning how to;

  • Joining words and joining clauses using and and or
  • Use of the suffixes –er, –est in adjectives and the use of –ly in Standard English to turn
    adjectives into adverbs
  • Subordination (using when, if, that, because) and co-ordination (using or, and, but)
  • Expanded noun phrases for description and specification [for example, the blue butterfly,
plain flour, the man in the moon]
  • How the grammatical patterns in a sentence indicate its function as a statement, question,
    exclamation or command
  • Correct choice and consistent use of present tense and past tense throughout writing
  • Use of the progressive form of verbs in the present and past tense to mark actions in
progress [for example, she is drumming, he was shouting]
  • Commas to separate items in a list
  • Learning the possessive apostrophe (singular) [for example, the girl’s book]
  • Add suffixes to spell longer words, including –ment, –ness, –ful, –less, –ly

This year we will be working hard to improve our spelling and will be a huge focus within our morning work and woven within many other curriculum areas. As the Year 2 team, we strongly recommend that children practice the many common exception words and spelling rules for Years 1 and 2. If spelling is an particular area that your child wants to improve, please use the word lists and suggested spelling games below.

Practising Spellings At Home

Mathematics

This half term we will be sharpening our fluency skills and covering the following

  • Identifying 3D shapes and their properties, including naming 2D faces
  • Telling the time on analogue and digital clocks.
  • Extending understanding of place value to include landmarked lines and estimation.
  • Doubling and halving, including odd numbers
  • Counting in halves and mixed numbers
  • Unit and non-unit fractions
  • Multiplication.

We will also be kick starting our journey with Times Table Rockstars to strengthen our times table knowledge. Therefore, please make the most of your child’s Times Table Rockstars account to develop their knowledge of the times tables and see their rock status grow!

https://ttrockstars.com/

The children also have accounts for Active Learn where they can revise and apply their knowledge through tasks that cover the entire Year 2 curriculum. All activities can be accessed when using a laptop or desktop. However, some are limited when using a tablet or an iPad.

http://www.activelearnprimary.co.uk

Similarly, the children also have access to espresso which can be used in a similar way to Active Learn but they are able to explore interactive resources covering the entire Year 2 curriculum as oppose to just Maths.

Science

Our next unit will be ‘Living Things’. In this unit children will make comparisons between things that are alive, things that are not alive, and things that were once alive. They will sort and compare animals, plants and non-living things and will create a list of features of living things. Children will notice that living things have offspring which resemble their parents and that they themselves grow into adults which reproduce. Children will order the stages of growth of humans from birth to old age.

Working Scientifically, children will use observable features to identify and classify living and non-living things. They will ask questions and use their observations and ideas to suggest answers to their questions.

Topic

We will be exploring our monarchy and castles throughout Britain in our topic, “Dungeons and Dragons”.

Please see the curriculum page to find out more.

Religious Educations

“What can we learn from sacred books?”

This is the question we will continue to focus on this half term. We will be discovering and discussing what religions, such as Christianity and Islam, learn from the sacred books of their religion.

Computing

This half term we will begin our project ‘Super Sci-fi!’. In this project, children will be exploring how to make an app based game and to identify bugs and debug it.

PE

Dance and Games will be the areas we will be developing this half term.

Please make sure that your child’s P.E. Kit consists of a pair of black pumps, plain black shorts or plain black jogging bottoms and a plain white t-shirt or one with the school logo. We suggest that your child brings their P.E. Kit into school when we begin the term and only take it home at the end of the term so that it can be washed and refreshed ready for the next half term. That way your child will always have their kit in school and they are prepared for every lesson.

Our P.E. lessons will be every Monday and Thursday.

PSHE

Our theme for this half term is ‘Healthy Me’, where we will discuss how we can look after our bodies and minds. We will also be discussing who else can help us.

Homework

Celebrating Roald Dahl Day 2019

Year 2 thoroughly enjoyed learning and performing Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhyme ‘Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf’.

Welcome to Year 2!

Welcome to Year 2!

The team in Year 2 are really looking forward to working hard this half term in the run up to the October Half Term!

Have a look through below to find out a little about what we will be exploring this half term.

English

We will be starting the half term off by following the journey of young Rosie Revere who dreams of becoming a great engineer. Where some people see rubbish, Rosie Revere sees inspiration. Alone is her room at night, shy Rosie constructs great inventions from odds and ends. Rosie’s gizmos would astound – if she ever let anyone see them. Afraid of failure, she hides them away under her bed. Until a fateful visit from her great-great aunt Rose, who shows her that a first flop isn’t something to fear – it’s something to celebrate! We will be walking in Rosie’s footsteps by planning and constructing our very own Gizmo’s. We will be writing instructions for building or using them, adverts to advertise them and much more. We will also be taking inspiration from Andrea Beaty the magnificent author to innovate our own narratives.

This year we will be working hard to improve our spelling and will be a huge focus within our morning work and woven within many other curriculum areas. As the Year 2 team, we strongly recommend that children practice the many common exception words and spelling rules for Years 1 and 2. Science

Uses of Materials is our first topic we will be exploring in Science. Through this top children will name, identify and hunt for everyday materials including wood, metal, plastic, glass, rubber, brick, rock, paper, fabric and card. They will list properties of different materials such as hardness, strength, flexibility and shininess. They will learn that the properties of materials are important to the object they are made from. They will identify suitable and unsuitable materials for different objects and will be able to explain why.

Working Scientifically, children will classify materials sorting them into groups in a variety of ways. They will use reference materials to find out some fascinating facts about a type of material. They will compare the strength of different types of paper predicting which will rip when pulled by their hands. They will learn what absorbency means and explore the absorbency of different types of materials. They will examine different ways to record results and select an appropriate way to record the results of an investigation about waterproof materials. They will apply the findings from these investigations to design a product.

Topic

We will be exploring our local area in our first topic, “Our Town, Our Denton!”.

Please see the curriculum page to find out more.

Religious Educations
