Welcome back Year 4! 

 

We all hope you had a fantastic break and are now ready for the final term of Year 4!

English

This half term we will be writing a story inspired by ‘Around the World in Eighty Days’, written by Jules Verne.  We will begin the writing process by interrogating ‘Around the World in Eighty Days’, along with similar texts in order to stimulate ideas and develop our vocabulary. We will then draft our writing, with a big focus on self-editing this term in order to be able to identify mistakes and improve the quality of our writing.

We willl be continuing to work hard to improve our spelling. The Year 4 team, we strongly recommend that children practise the many common exception words and spelling rules for Year 3 and 4. If spelling is an particular area that your child wants to improve, please use the word lists and suggested spelling games below.

Mathematics

This half term we will begin by looking at place value, extending our knowledge of sequences and rounding by 10, 100 and 1000. We will then move onto statistics, in particular time and distance graphs. Following this we will then re-visit measurement, calculating the area and perimeter of 2D shapes. Finally, we will complete the term by solving mathematical problems, developing our reasoning skills.

It is crucial in Year 4 that the children are still developing their fluency with their times tables up to 12 and a range of number facts, such as pairs that total 100, halves and doubles and counting in multiples of 10, 20, 25, 50, 100 and 1000.

Science

The human body is our next topic we will be exploring in Science. Through this topic the children will initially begin by exploring the digestion system, identifying parts of the human body and explaining how the digestion system functions. We will then be looking at teeth, identifying similarities and differences and carrying out an investigation in order to explore methods to protect our teeth.

Topic

This term we will be carrying on with our topic from last term, ‘Let the Music Play!’

This term we will continue to look at the History of music and different genres. We’ll also be study the change and development of instruments and how they’re organised. We will be exploring a wide range of composers and artists throughout history. We will also be making connections to our novel in English, ‘Around the World in 80 Days’ by researching the different music styles from around Europe and celebrating them through our very own Eurovision contest! This topic will be developed further next half term!

Religious Educations

This term we will be exploring the following question in depth,

‘Right or Wrong?’

Exploring contrasting opinions of people’s understandings of ‘right’ and ‘wrong’.

Computing

This half term we will be continuing our project, ‘Heroes’. In this project, children will explorehow to use a range of software to contstructs their own algorithms to build an interactive game.

PE

Atheletics and Games are the topics we’ll be covering this half term. We’ll be looking at different types of throws, catches and how vital strategy and communication are to these sports. We also have sports and health week, commencing the 17th of June, where we will have the opportunity to participate in a range of sports, which children will need their P.E. kits every day for. Our P.E. lessons are every Monday and every other Wednesday, but it’s important to have a fully P.E. kit in school everyday for cross curricular learning.

 

PSHE

Our theme for this half term is ‘Changing Me’, where children will explore how we inherit some of our personal characteristics through our birth parent. Through this children will also explore how their bodies may change as they grow.

Homework

In Year 4 homework is given out each Friday and is to be returned every Wednesday. This half term the children will have a spelling activity each week and either a reading task or mathematics task based on our learning in class. The children can also choose from our ‘Let the Music Play’ homework menu! Homework can be presented in any way the children wish, so if they have published something using an iPad, tablet or computer please email it to us!

English
This half term we will be delving into an amazing novel, ‘The Iron Man’, written by the talented ‘Ted Hughes’. The story follows a young boy who makes an astounding discovery, one that affects his whole town, but it is a tale that is hard to believe! We will be exploring how Ted Hughes creates such effective suspense in his stories to capture the reader’s imagination for when we innovate our own suspense narratives.

This year we will be working hard to improve our spelling and will be a huge focus within our morning work and woven within many other curriculum areas. As the Year 4 team, we strongly recommend that children practise the many common exception words and spelling rules for Year 3 and 4. Sound is our next topic we will be exploring in Science. Through this topic children will initially begin by exploring what sound is, how it travels and we can hear it, the different aspects of sound including pitch and volume and we’ll also be investigating how can change these and what affects them.

English

This half term we will be looking at a book by Salvatore Rubbino, called ‘A Walk in London’. We will be investigating techniques the author uses to build suspense, as well as exploring a range of other texts such as Harry Potter and Narnia. Based on these texts the children will use a range of features to create  their own piece of writing on their local area, Denton.

Again, this term we will be working hard to improve our spelling and will be a huge focus within our morning work and woven within many other curriculum areas. Science

Dangers to Living Things is our next topic we will be exploring in Science. Through this topic children will explore the affects the environment has on living things and how in particular it can impact food chains. Using their knowledge and understanding of Dangers to Living Things the children will plan and carry out an investigation to make an environmental change in order to discover the impact it may have on living things.

 

Topic

We will start the topic,  ‘Invaders and Settlers’, we will be moving through time to explore other invaders and settlers, such as the Celts and the Vikings. We will be finding out more about the infamous female warrior, Boudicca and how the Vikings were able to travel from country to country.

 

Religious Educations

‘Why is Jesus Inspiring to some people?’

We will be focusing on this particular question this half term. We will begin by exploring the meaning of the word ‘inspiring’ and who the inspiring people are in our lives. Following this we will look at the story of Jesus, understanding how and why he became an inspiration for some people.

Computing

This half term we will begin our project ‘Back to the Future’. In this project, children will create their own blog detailing what they learn from research that they will complete throughout the sessions.  Children will learn about different technologies both old and new, about inventors and the different components of a computer.

PE

Games is our focus this half term, within this topic we will be exploring the different roles within a range of games and how communication, listening and teamwork are essential skills to be successful when playing team sports.

We will continue with our swimming lessons at Denton Swimming Baths. Please make sure that you come prepared with your full kit.

4T’s lessons are every Wednesday and 4D’s lessons are every Friday.

PSHE

Our theme for this half term is ‘Goals and Dreams’, where we will discuss the meaning of having goals and dreams and what we might do to achieve them. Through this topic we will look at obstacles that we may have to overcome when attempting to achieve our goals and dreams, promoting skills such as  resilience and persistence.

Science

 

Changes of State is our next topic we will be exploring in Science. Through this topic children will describe the differences between solids, liquids and gases. They will recognise that the same material can exist in different states and be able to explain the water cycle in terms of changes of state specifically in terms of condensation and evaporation. They will be able to explain when evaporation occurs and be able to describe it in terms of liquids changing to gases.

Topic

This term we will begin a new topic ‘Waters of the World’.

Through this topic we will look at the History of rivers and bridges all over the world, then concentrating on the History of our own local area. We will be looking widely at the Geography of rivers and bridges throughout the topic, covering the most famous rivers such as the Amazon and the Thames.

 

Religious Educations

‘Why do some people describe their lives as a journey?’

This is the question we will be focusing on this half term. We will begin by exploring the metaphor itself and what it means for our selves and our journeys. We then take a closer look at the specific milestones and events in our lives, including, Baptisms, Bar Mitzvahs, Weddings, Sacred Thread Ceremony and many more.

This half term we will begin our project ‘Back to the Future’. In this project, children will create their own blog detailing what they learn from research that they will complete throughout the sessions.  Children will learn about different technologies both old and new, about inventors and the different components of a computer.
