SpringTerm 2020

Spring Term January 2020

Happy New Year everybody!

We will regularly update our web pages to keep you up to date with what we are doing throughout this year.

This term our topic is WW2. We will be studying this topic in detail throughout the term, culminating in our visit to Stockport Air Raid Shelter on 8th June. We will be studying Goodnight Mr Tom in English lessons and using this as a stimulus for lots of different writing opportunities. We will incorporate art, music and DT projects also. The children will also be able to complete projects at home, as part of their weekly homework tasks. We will be continuing to improve our SPAG skills throughout our work, concentrating on different aspects within our writing tasks. At this stage we will be revising many of the areas that children should be able to do.

Remember to keep using your Spelling Shed log in to practise your spellings every week.

This is another really useful website for helping children with their spellings-

www.spellingframe.co.uk

In maths, we will continue working in our smaller groups, to address any areas where support may be needed. We will continue to develop and extend our skills in the 4 rules of number, our understanding of place value, decimals, percentages, and fractions and measurement. We will be using a mastery approach to focus on the using and applying aspects of maths through reasoning and explanation.

Please remember to encourage your child to carry on practising their times tables up to 12×12 as it is essential that they have rapid recall of all tables facts, including the inverse. Encourage them to go on TTRockstars every week to have fun and practise at the same time. Try and beat the other class in Battle of the Bands.

There are a variety of great websites to help with revision in year 6. Use your log in for Discovery Learning regularly to help you with any areas of year 6 work that you may need extra practise on. If you need a log in and password please see Mrs Lynch.

In science, we will be completing our work on electricity and begin our work on  Light and Sight.

In the Light and Sight unit children will learn about how light travels and that we see things because light travels from light sources to our eyes, or from light sources to objects and then to our eyes. They will learn that shiny or reflective surfaces alter the direction in which light travels. Children will have the opportunity to solve problems related to everyday life about how light travels and how we see. Children will also investigate and explain the shapes of shadows, and relate this to light travelling in straight lines.

Homework-

Homework will be set on a Friday and it must be brought back into school by the following Wednesday. The children will also be bringing home their reading books every day and it is vitally important that they read every day. We are really working on the children’s comprehension skills so it would be great if you could ask them questions about their books every time you read with them.

We keep track of the homework and reading on charts in the classroom that are linked to the assertive mentoring scheme that we use in school. In order to achieve a green mark their homework MUST be completed and handed in on WEDNESDAY.

We will be doing P.E. on Wednesday and Friday, so the children need their kits in school on these days. Just a reminder that school P.E. kit comprises of a white t-shirt, black shorts and pumps and if P.E. is taking place outside and the weather is cold, the children are allowed to wear dark jogging bottoms and trainers. All jewellery must be removed for P.E.

We are looking forward to sharing all these exciting learning opportunities with you.  Don’t forget to keep in contact using blogs.

The Arrival By Alfie 6T

It all started an extensive time ago in a dark, dull city on a dark, dull street in a dark, dull broken down house. There were a poor young family. Times were tough. The challenges the poor family had to face were tough as well; they fought against limited food, limited clothes and most of all, limited money. The sad girl came down for her breakfast and looked at the rusty, dusty suit case jam-packed to the brim with pictures and clothes. Later on, the family that was falling apart got ready to sadly trudge over to the newly built train station. The father let go from his wife and daughter and rode on his way to a town called Strenga. The man slowly stepped off the train, thinking dearly about his beloved family…

The Arrival by Liam 6T

Searching for a story with a house on a hill, a family provided for and the usual happy ending? Then maybe, just maybe this book isn’t for you, so close this book and go pick another one from the shelf because this story features the struggle of living and real life problems which often remain untold and a secret. Family problems you will understand when you get older.

It all started on a pinky, purple dawn in a dull city on a dull street in a dull house. The man  grabbed his family picture and put it in his suitcase without his daughter knowing. His wife gently put her hand on his. He could see the pain his wife was in. The man was hoping his daughter wouldn’t see the suitcase in the hall. When she was coming down the stairs; she noticed her mum was in low spirits, so she looked around and saw a bright red suitcase. She got dressed and passed the suitcase to her dad. He looked at her sorrowfully. They walked down the dull street with shadow monsters creeping around everywhere. It was only when she reached the train station, she realized that her father was going and she didn’t know when he would be back…

The Arrival By Jayden 6T

Looking for a story based on a well provided family or angels? Well you shouldn’t carry on hoping for that but since you’ve read this far you might as well carry on reading. For this story tells of the struggles of living and real life. Maybe you’ll understand the troubles the family in the story have. I won’t waste anymore time because this story is long.

It all started on a long Autumn night long ago,in a dull city, on a dull street, in an unlit house. Times were arduous and the family were poor and unable to accommodate their daughter properly. After a lot of monotonous arguing, the parents decided that the Dad should go to Spain. The mother was devastated that he was going. The father packed his suitcase and went to bed. When the daughter woke up and went downstairs she noticed the suitcase, tickets and passport and she knew something bad was going to happen. She sat in the corner and sobbed. Whilst everyone was eating they were silent. The Dad grabbed his bag and everyone got ready to leave. Walking up the same old cobbled path, they heard the train coming. With one last hug, the Dad sat on the last seat, last row. With all the depressed faces surrounding him, it felt like they were consuming him. When he got to the boat he saw four large tubes. The man was one of the first in the line so he got to be one of the first on the boat.

The Arrival By Alfie Sugden

The man met an old man who wanted a worker who was ready for the well-paying job he had planned. The man had also met a stray creature who had followed him on his journey for 23 years. The old man was named Marley. The person talked about his past so dearly… He said that he used to be in the war and he only served for 2 years because he got shot. Marley ended up getting the man some help by offering him some jobs, one of which was working for Marley! The man was thinking about these jobs but there was one problem. If he said that he wouldn’t take Marley’s job for him then he would feel cruel, so without a doubt the man took Marley’s job. The fellow went for his job, the reason he had to keep the money he earned today was because he wanted to write a heart-warming letter to his family. After he had earned the money, the man wrote a letter to his wife and daughter…

Dear Chloe and Jess

I miss you dearly and I would like to say that I have found a job, got a pet and have now even bought you a letter to write to you! This is only a quick letter because my boss, Marley, has said only to have ten minutes’ break. I will see you soon, lots of love Dad/Husband.

The Arrival Paragraph Three by Ellis 6T

As the man woke up, he could sense the smell of something weird. As he pulled back his covers he saw it; the snake and mouse creature. He felt a strange tingle and he knew it was his depression. He got dressed and headed into the city. Out of nowhere, he bumped into a young woman who looked kind and friendly so he asked “Where is the nearest boat?,” he asked she didn’t understand him so she gave him her own ticket and he said “Thank you so much.” As he entered the boat he sat down and talked to this woman about the past. As they talked much more, he knew she had a sad, depressing live, lonely, forced and desperate. As he got off the boat, he looked into the distance- he thought he was lucky that he was here.  After the long walk down the steps, he finally arrived at the markets. He looked at his shopping list and was trying to find the bread. After the long search he found it but the creature was scratching a box full of exotic fruits but after eating this fruit he decided to try some more food. After this he was full up and became friends with the shop owner who said “Come back to my house and have tea?” As they arrived at their house, they had a delicious tea had some fun and he laughed for the first time in a while. He left and headed back to his apartment.

Autumn Term Update Y6

Autumn Term  Second half term update 2019

Welcome to another busy, but exciting half term in year 6.

This half term, in English we are looking at The Arrival by Shaun Tan. We have written letters, character descriptions, diary entries, short play scripts and we will be writing a longer story built around the central character’s journey to another country.
We will be continuing to improve our SPAG skills throughout our work, concentrating on different aspects within our writing tasks.

Remember to keep using your Spelling Shed log in to practise your spellings.

https://play.edshed.com/

spellingframe.co.uk is another wonderful website that will help you learn all the Y5 and Y6 words.

In maths, we will continue working in our three smaller groups, to address any areas where support may be needed. We will continue to develop and extend our skills in the 4 rules of number, our understanding of place value, decimals,  fractions and measurement. We will be using a mastery approach to focus on the using and applying aspects of maths through reasoning and explanation. The children’s verbal reasoning and explanation skills are improving rapidly and many are becoming increasingly confident in explaining their methods and ideas to their group.

In science, we will be working on a unit called Changing Circuits. Children will use recognised symbols in circuit diagrams correctly. They will discuss analogies and offer their own explanations for the results of their investigations about altering brightness of bulbs and volume of buzzers. They will describe how to do this in a variety of ways including changing the number of components, battery voltage, or the properties of the wires in the circuits.

We are still working on our geography-led topic on North America. We will be learning about the physical and human elements of this continent and investigate aspects such as climate and population. We have studied many aspects so far and produced amazing artwork on buildings and totem poles. The standard of homework has been wonderful and some has been displayed in the cloakroom.

Parents please remember to encourage your child to carry on practising their times tables up to 12×12 as it is essential that they have rapid recall of all tables facts, including the inverse. Encourage them to go on TTRockstars every week to have fun and practise at the same time.

Homework will continue to be set on a Friday and it must be brought back into school by the following Wednesday. We are really working on the children’s comprehension so it would be great if you could ask them questions about their books every time you read with them.

We keep track of the homework and reading on charts in the classroom that are linked to the assertive mentoring scheme that we use in school. The children now have the opportunity to attend a lunchtime homework club on a Wednesday and a Thursday.

We will be doing P.E. on Fridays with the sports coach, so the children need their kits in school on Fridays.  We will also try and fit in another lesson in the week, so it would be best to keep the kit in school every day.

Just a reminder that school P.E. kit comprises of a white t-shirt, black shorts and pumps and if P.E. is taking place outside and the weather is cold, the children are allowed to wear dark jogging bottoms and trainers. All jewellery must be removed for P.E.

The Arrival

The liner docked. All the passengers disembarked and queued, patiently standing at the back of line. The man clutched his application form and hoped… He prayed that he would be allowed residency in the new country. Everybody was waiting to been seen. Would everyone be accepted? There was no pushing, no shoving ,no jostling. Just a snake of people hoping and waiting… He was hoping too, until he thought of his family. He was thinking about his decision and if he had done the right thing, hoping he would be reunited with his family.
