WHAT ARE WE LEARNING IN AUTUMN?

This theme for our Autumn terms is ‘All about Myself’.

This involves helping children to develop a sense of seeing themselves as a valuable individual, build constructive and respectful relationships, express their feelings and consider the feelings of others, regulate behaviour accordingly, work and play cooperatively including taking turns with others, and give focussed attention to what the teacher says.

Regular sessions take place daily / weekly of programmes such as: Attention Autism, Sensory Circuits, Core Words for AAC, Sensory Stories, Dough Disco, Squiggle While You Wiggle and Supersounds.

Children will also receive small group and individual sessions informed by their EHCP and current Provision Map and work directed or advised by SALT, OT and involved Educational Psychology Services.

Outdoor Learning

The children have access to outdoor areas for sensory exploration and gross motor play. The outdoor learning areas give children another setting to explore, experience and learn through different areas of the EYFS or KS1 stage curriculums.

Sensory Spaces

In addition to our outdoor sensory space, we have a sensory room for children to explore and meet their sensory needs.

Maths

Daily sessions of Maths Rhymes and Stories take place plus opportunity to explore maths resources from our Maths areas in Continuous Provision with adults to adapt activities to match individual children’s needs.

Literacy

Our activities within Literacy focus on AAC/ speaking and listening effectively to communicate and understand the world. Also developing the pre-skills and early skills necessary to become a reader and writer. We will also be developing our vocabulary and learning core words for communication.

Autumn Terms words include:

  • I/me/my
  • want
  • help
  • yes/no
  • like / more
  • finish
  • wait

During Autumn terms we will be exploring a variety of text including:

The Core Nursery Rhymes and Songs we will share this Term are:

Brush, Brush, Brush Your Teeth

Heads Shoulders Knees and Toes

One Finger, One Thumb (Keep Moving)

I’ve Got a Body (A Very Busy Body)

Phonics

In Phonics we use Supersounds, an active and fun programme of regular short daily sessions aimed at supporting all the developmental skills and understanding to be ready for Phonics learning as a route to reading and spelling. The children explore all the aspects of Phase 1 Phonics. The seven aspects are: environmental sounds, instrumental sounds, body percussion, rhythm and rhyme, alliteration, voice sounds, and oral blending and segmenting.

As children become confident with all aspects of Phase 1 will begin our Storytime Phonics programme which combines learning letter sounds, word blending and segmenting within the context of enjoyable quality storybooks and related multi-sensory activities.

PE

We have two PE session per week where children have the space to explore large equipment for gross motor development of skills like climbing, balancing and jumping using different resources to within their outdoor play. They will  practice coordination skills such as throwing and catching with a variety of resources likes balls, beanbags, skittles, ribbons and hoops. There will be opportunity to join in collaborative activities such as parachute games and see-saw.

Happy Learning from the KS1 Resource Base team.
