Children have been taking part in the National Education Nature Park’s programme. This empowers children and young people to make a positive difference to both their own and nature’s future. They have recently taken part in the ‘Habitat Heroes’ where they identified places for wildlife that we have on our site, and mapped them on an interactive map.
Summer : Year 6
We are all working really hard getting ready for our SATS tests in May.
As we get closer, it’s important that we remember the things that will really help us to get ready and the things to remember:
SATs focus on what children know about Maths and English.
They will not reflect how talented they are at science, geography, art, PE…, and they certainly won’t highlight all their amazing personal characteristics.
SATs don’t tell the whole story.
Their results will say if they did or did not meet a certain standard but not necessarily by what margin. These thresholds change each year according to the overall national performance, so what was classed as ‘meeting the expected standard’ this year might not be the same as last year. Your school may be able to provide you with more detailed feedback.
SATs are only four days out of a whole Primary School career.
In reality, there’s one or two papers each day that last 30 to 60 minutes.
As long as we try our best, everyone will be proud of us!
Advice for the tests:
Topic: We are covering two topics this half term, We will be looking at Climate change and how this affects our local area. We will then move on to study the amazing Ancient Greeks! Although Climate change is only a short topic for us we will study in detail how the area of Haughton Green and Denton is affected. We will also make weather vanes to study the wind. During our Ancient Greece topic we will also complete lots of art work and use clay to try and recreate some of the beautiful vases and sculptures they created.
English: This term we will be looking at a range of writing styles. Firstly, we will be writing a balanced argument then we will be writing spy stories!
In SPaG lessons we will be revising all areas of punctuation and continuing to work on all the aspects of grammar to make your written work better. Remember the children have weekly spellings to learn, using Spelling Shed.
Maths: In our maths lessons we will be covering the Year 6 objectives from the maths Curriculum. You will be continuing to work hard to achieve your targets in a variety of aspects of maths, trying to become more fluent and developing your reasoning and problem solving skills. We will be focussing on the using and applying aspect of maths through problem solving, reasoning, explaining and investigating. You will also be continuing to learn all your times tables so that you know all the multiplication and division facts to 12 x 12 to become and taking part in the Battle of the Bands.
Science:
Classifying Living Things: In this unit children will learn how to classify living things using the major classification kingdoms. They will identify and describe the observable characteristics of a range of classification groups including micro-organisms, plants and animals. Children will make careful observations to identify the characteristics that help scientists classify all living things, such as whether a living thing has a backbone and how they reproduce. Children will also be able to use their observations to construct classification keys of increasing complexity. They will use evidence from their investigation to predict and investigate how to accelerate the rate of decay. We will complete this unit in the summer term.
Evolution and Inheritance: In this unit children will have worked towards answering the Quest question ‘How do living things evolve?’ They will have investigated how living things have changed over time and that fossils provide information about living things that inhabited the Earth millions of years ago. They will have had the opportunity to make a visit (real or virtual) to a Natural History museum and they will have constructed a geological timeline. Children will have identified how animals and plants are adapted to suit their environment in different ways and that adaptation may lead to evolution. They will have explored the principal of inheritance, recognising that living things produce offspring of the same kind, but that normally such offspring vary and are not identical to their parents. Children will have researched how plants and animals are adapted to suit their environment in different ways and they will have identified some beneficial adaptations that may lead to evolution. They will have explored natural selection through drama and designed their own species.
Homework
The children will continue to get English and maths homework every week. We will always set the homework on a Friday and it must be brought back into school by the following Wednesday. This can either be set on googleclassroom or paper copies are available. The children will also be bringing home their reading books every day and it is vitally important that they read every day. We are really working on the children’s comprehension skills so it would be great if you could ask them questions about their books every time you read with them.
We keep track of the homework and reading on charts in the classroom that are linked to the assertive mentoring scheme that we use in school. In order to achieve a green mark their homework MUST be completed and handed in on WEDNESDAY.
We will be doing P.E. on Mondays, so the children need their kits in school on these days. Just a reminder that school P.E. kit comprises of a white t-shirt, black shorts and pumps and if P.E. is taking place outside and the weather is cold, the children are allowed to wear dark jogging bottoms and trainers. All jewellery must be removed for P.E.
Amongst all of this, we also have a really exciting end to our time at Corrie planned, with the Year 6 show, Sports and Health week, Corrie’s Got Talent, Leavers Assembly and Go Ape trip, so there is lots to keep us busy and happy!

Welcome to the final term of year 3, we have a busy and action-packed term ahead!
PE lessons in 3AF will continue to be on Thursdays. Please make sure that your child has their PE kit in school. This should be black shorts, pumps / trainers and a plain white T-shirt or Corrie PE top.

In maths we will continue using Power Maths and will start the term by continuing our work on fractions before looking at money and time. Please practise telling the time as much as possible with your child at home. We will then learn about angles and properties of shapes before moving onto statistics.
English:
In English, we will start the term by looking at Escape from Pompeii by Christina Balit, which tells the true story of the volcanic eruption in Pompeii in 79AD. Children will look at writing descriptive recounts of the volcano erupting before writing their own newspaper reports about the eruption. We will then look at The Tear Thief by Carol-Ann Duffy about a thief who each night collects the tears of children who cry. We will use this story as inspiration to write a persuasive poster and a letter of explanation. We will continue to embed year 3 SPaG throughout all of our writing.
Topic: Extreme Earth
Our geography topic this term is Extreme Earth. We will look at the structure of the Earth and will be investigating what causes volcanoes and earthquakes. We will then look at the impact of a natural disaster and what to do during a natural disaster. We will learn about other extreme weather such as tornadoes and tsunamis and identify patterns in weather around the world.
Science: Plants
We will learn about what plants need and the functions of all the different parts of the plant. We will explore what plants need to grow well. We will learn about the function of all the components of plants. We will grow our own bean seed. We will take part in many practical experiments.
PHSE: JIGSAW: Relationships and Changing Me
The children will learn how babies grow, outside and inside body changes, family stereotypes and look ahead to next year in school and further as they grow up.
RE: What does it mean to be a Hindu in Britain today?
In RE the children will learn more about the Hindu faith and the different beliefs and traditions. We will then look at what it means for people being a Hindu in modern Britain.
PE: Athletics, hockey, cricket, football
In PE the children will learn about aspects of the above areas, improving their techniques and skills in these sports.
Music: BRASS
During our music lessons the children will have the opportunity to learn how to play a brass instrument with Tameside music service. They will play with the Halle orchestra at the Bridgewater Hall in June. This is always an amazing experience for the children which they thoroughly enjoy.
Computing: The children will learn about Branching databases and programming with Scratch.
MFL: French
We will complete our work on colours then move onto months and the date, then look at The Very Hungry Caterpillar story in French. After that we will look at the topics of My Family and On the Farm.
The Arts : We will continue our work on making art with natural materials. We will make our own paint from plants and fruits and use these to make patterns or pictures. We will then look at the art forms of Film and Photography and cloth, thread and paint.

The children will also be set a piece of maths work, linked to their work in class that week and a spelling activity.
Home Reading: Reading a school book is part of your child’s homework too. Children should read at least twice week and have their book signed by an adult. Please record the page numbers and the date. Reading books will be checked every Wednesday. Your child’s reading diary must be signed before a new book is given. Your child should have their reading book in school every day as we often have further opportunities to read.
Homework will be sent home every Friday and is expected to be returned to school by the following Wednesday.

The Year 3 team
Hope you’ve all had a brilliant holiday and are ready and raring to go again. We are really looking forward to this half term and we hope you are too! Summer Term is a very busy one, so here’s what we’ll be up to!
English
Our focus is on writing a narrative within the fantasy/ dystopia genre. We will be basing our work around the text ‘The Lost Thing’ by Shaun Tan. The focus of this book is working together as a community and finding your own identity. We will be analysing different texts and video clips to help inspire our own writing, so that we can carry on being awesome authors too!
We will develop our SPAG knowledge through continuing to learn about the various word classes and different spelling patterns, including the Y5/6 word list. We will be focussing on how to apply all our SPAG work into our own writing
Reading
This term our class novel will be The Boy in the Tower by Polly Yo-Hen. Here is a little bit about the book
Ade loves living at the top of a tower block. From his window, he feels like he can see the whole world stretching out beneath him.
His mum doesn’t really like looking outside – but it’s going outside that she hates. She prefers to sleep all day inside their tower, where it’s safe.
Except it isn’t any more. Strange plants have started to take over and tower blocks are falling down around them.
Now Ade and his mum are trapped and there’s no way out . . .
Maths
Our first unit will be geometry where we will learn bout angles and how to use a compass to measure angles accurately. We will also look at shape and translating shapes. We will then move onto decimals and learn how to read, write, order and compare numbers with up to three decimal places.]

Children in Boost Group will continue to have the fantastic opportunity to take part in Forest Schooling each Tuesday. We venture out in all sorts of weather conditions and therefore children should have waterproof and warm clothing and sturdy footwear. On sunnier days, the children may need a sunhat and sun cream.
Other Support
To help support each child’s individual needs, children may take part in other activities to support their needs. These may include Zones of Regulation, speech and language, motor skills, Lego therapy, social skills, memory skills or support with specific life skills.
Home Reading:
We ask that you read with your child as often as possible and sign their reading record a minimum of twice weekly in line with school policy. We will check reading records and change reading books every Friday. We monitor reading, homework and PE kits as part of our Assertive Mentoring Scheme.

It was fantastic to welcome The Worshipful, The Civic Mayor of Tameside, Councillor Betty Affleck, to school. She spoke to all Keystage 2 children and presented our year 5 children with their ‘Keen to be Green’ arts award.

HOMEWORK
We will continue to have a creative approach to our homework this term. You will be given Maths and Spelling homework each week as well as being able to choose from a range of creative activities in Topic.
Homework is given out on Friday and is due in the following Wednesday.
REMEMBER:
Homework handed in on Wednesday is GREEN.
Homework handed in on Thursday is YELLOW.
Homework handed in on Friday is RED.
We read in class every day, so make sure you always have your Reading Log in school. Please make sure you also read regularly each week at home and ask an adult to sign your Reading Log for you. We will sign your Reading Log every WEDNESDAY to check you have read at home, so please don’t forget!!

Parents & Carers are always very welcome to call in to discuss any aspect of their child’s learning, any other area of their school life or just to say ‘hello’. We are available anytime before or after school, except on Wednesdays because that’s when we have our Staff Meeting.
